I thought the economy was bad? Thickstun $920

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by no6, Feb 14, 2011.

  1. E-bay $920 for a PM-7, there must be a corner in the world somewhere that there is still stupid money out there, I don't know what else it could be unless maybe the Alians have cought on.

When the mainstreamers get tired of the traditional scene, you'll be able to pick this stuff up for nothing.....when the newest bandwagon comes by.

Once again,... "Money don't come with instructions"

  6. From what I understand that is a fair price on one. There are still people with money that are building some insanly expensive traditional rods. Perhaps its the people selling those intakes. ;)

Last year, I was gonna pick one up for my '39... a fleeting thought... I don't need one really... But I saw two in a row end at Ebay for over $1100. They are pretty hard to get - original or repro.

I don't think a "bad economy" really effects stuff like this.

I thought the reproductions were still available for 750... or did they stop making them?

My experience was, that the engine had to run at a high idle with this intake, (Actually any intake with long runners, if I am remembering right) ,.. but it seamed that the air/fuel mixture would brake up, and gas would puddle in the manifold, if you let it idle,... It was great for throttling your engine,.. But for daily use I could never get it to run right,.... So,.. what was I doing wrong ? (This was back in the 70's)

  13. don't feel stupid... I didn't know what one was either... now I know....

  14. About an hour after 6 in the evening.

Harm anyone that I have ever known that ran one ran the idle high but most of thsoe old guys were running the hottest cam they could lay their hands on so that could have been part of the problem also.

Hot lick item of the moment equals inflated price on hard to get item. Plus as P&****** said, the big money boys who are putting together traditional cars right now don't care about the price as long as they get what they want. They probably think that buying 1100 intake is cheap in comparison to buying 1100 each wheels plus matching tires an then having them be obsolete by the next show.

I have found that people are still paying good money for the rare stuff.

the employment rate in this country hovers around 90%. people seem to forget that sometimes.

  21. I just sold an original before Christmas on ebay , it finished at $550, either it's my timing or my luck. I watched 4 original 63 Vette master cylinders go for $1000 all in a row, I got $400 for mine, I can never time it right.

The economy has little to do with a hobby...and if you wanna play, you gotta pay...

I picked up one about 10-12 years ago with some holes drilled in it for $100.00. Had it welded up and dressed off and beaded. Looks mint now. Crazy prices. That is why my QC is a Winters and not a Halibrand.

The PM 7 is my favorite vintage flatty intake. Really nice ones usually go for 800.00 and up. They were repopping them at one time, but I tried for months to get a new one and could never get one shipped. If I remember correctly, the repops were around 750.00. My flatty runs and idles fine with one. It's like any other rare part, you get two guys that want it at the same time and it's game on.

    • About 5 years ago a friend of mine had one painted dayglo orange that he was using as a door stop in his shop. At the time he owed me $100 and I offered to clear the debt and match it with another $100 and take it off his hands. He said he would consider it as he got the manifold in a trade, virtually for free.
    • A couple weeks later I was at his place and noticed it wasn't by the door. I inquired as to what had happened to it. He said someone who he didn't know stopped to look at a project car he had for sale and offered him $200 cash so he sold it thinking it would entice the guy to buy his car. No dice, the project car still sits in his storage shed and I haven't found one I can afford since.

I've seen two at Hershey in the last two years in the $450-500 range;one from a dealer who only sold speed equipment.

  30. Did he pay you the $100 bucks he owed you?
