i have been looking at all the guys doing there own white walls and think i am going to go the same way for now. my question is on my 49 shoebox it has the opt 16 in wheels which tire size is every one running? the car will be lowered 3ins i used the search but only see 15in wheels so sorry if this has been talked about. thanks jonathon
6.50s on the front and 6.50-7.50 on the rear. Both are going to be a pretty tall tires but that is what would have been run back in the day.
Radial not bias is what I am looking for. If i find the size i need i am going to find some with raised white lettering so i can grind them down to ake wide white.
I am no tire expert at all, but when I was looking for a skinny radial 16, the only ones I saw were made for a small mini motorhome/or cube van that run dual rears. I don't recall the number size but I doubt that type of tire would come in raised white letters. Maybe go find a used truck lot to look at sizes?..at least you could get the number size.
Sounds like your probably looking for a 31" tall tire. That is what a 7.50 16 is (31&1/2" diameter). Try this tire calculator and when you are looking for rubber tell your tire man what diameter/height tire you need and he can find similarly tall tires. http://www.1010tires.com/TireSizeCalculator.asp?action=submit&reset=yes .
"Back In The Day" the first thing anyone would have done to a '49 Ford with 16" wheels - get a set of 15's ... in '57 - '58, 14's were the way to go.
Yeah, My buddy just did that with his 49 coupe, got rid of the 16"s and got some 15" rims pluss wide whites....Roach.
