WOW seem like there is alot to do as a car guy down there, Thanks for all the info, And well see what happens if I get the green light, I hoping to at least get out of here for a few weeks and come down there to work, I will be driving all around the Dallas/ ft.worth area as we are opening 30+ store in that area right off the bat some time in march, and I have the list to where there all at so I can study them.:D Going to be very busy there, I know they opened a warehouse in FL. last year and they are just booming down there, up here in ohio well lets just say I just lucky I have a job and People got to eat. Sad was talking to one of the driver's from Wis. and here said they take 1 to 2 loads a day to a store and here we take 1 every other day. Very sad up here.

I live in southern Denton county, in a semi rural area. You will like it here. Try Double Oak, Arglye, or Bartonville area fo housing. Houses are usually sitting on at least one acre and sell for anywhere from $100 per foot to
$115 per foot in the area. This area is about a 15 minute drive up to Denton. Welcome to Texas.

the real estate is cheaper north of Denton than south. You get up around gainsville, nocona, sherman area and the smaller towns are depressed economies. good place to pick up an affordable house or even build a shop.
alot of german resturaunts in that area. you'll be swimming in bbq briskit.
If I was going to be working in Denton I'd lean towards the north side if I was buying. a realtor would advise resale, I'm thinking quiet, cheap, and easier to get to work from than trying to come through dallas to get to denton. Morning traffic jams start about 7am just south of denton. evening interstate traffic unclogs just south of Denton. if you don't get through dallas by 6 am it's probably going to take an hour to get from denton to downtown after 7am. worst stretch of I-35E is from the I-35E/I-35W split to the I-635 loup I think.
South, from Dallas to Houston everything gets turned up a few notches.

    I almost forgot...
My buddy and his wife take car of an old lady here in Omaha. She owns a house north of dallas. the last renters trashed the place and she wants dave and I to take a ride down there and inspect it. The realtor who is managing the property for her is telling her it's a total loss and she needs to dump it. Millie thinks it sounds fishy.
I can see if I can find out more if you want.

I was going to say the same thing about the weather, more time to drive your classic because no snow. When the Fort Worth Stock Show is going on, that's the worst for weather.

Lawbreaker2, tons of area around Denton, even South like other posters have replied. You need to schedule a weekend visit and see some of the area.

I lived in Denton for 8 years and Pilot Point for 2-3 years..Its a great area to live in. Wish I was still there...lots of car stuff-Pistons and Paint, its the Outlaw Fuel Alterds home track north of town(great show), Good Guys event 20 minutes away at Texas Motor Speedway, Pate Swap meet, great Mexican Food (you'll learn to love it) and great Texas hospitality...Being in Texas is a way of life...

Two things I didn't see mentioned. No state income tax, and bonded titles.

When I moved to Austin in '81 I was confused why there was no state income tax withheld from my paycheck. 'Cause there isn't any!

And you can get a title to any car or truck, no matter where it came from, new or old, by putting up a small bond.

Best part about Denton is you can buy a new home 2000+sqft house for 120k. Denton is just off IH35E so easy access to anywhere. Plenty of stuff to do here too car shows, sporting events, Texas country music concerts (if you like country music). Lewisville lake is close by if you like that sort of thing. Windstar casino is an hour north If you like that. There is something here for anyone!

Having lived in Texas for the first eight years I was married (out of now 41) I can say that guys in Texas probably put more miles on their rods on a Saturday beer or burger run than a lot of guys in other states do in a month. 150/200 miles one way to a one day rod trot just means that you get to plan where you are going to stop for breakfast on the way down and dinner on the way back and sometimes that is the reason for picking that event over another one.

While we do have some tornadoes, there aren't very many. And, the likelihood of one hitting YOU is very slim. When they do touch down, they really don't affect a very large area. They're not very wide and they don't go very far. Mathematically, your chances of them missing you are very, very good. They're not like hurricanes, earthquakes or tropical storms which destroy large areas. The news always exaggerates things and shows the worst of the worst. One would think that every time there is a tornado, thousands of homes are blown to splinters. That's just not the case. Most of them hit in fields and such.

I just googled Texas tornado statistics. If you can believe everything you read on the internet, your chances in Texas are 1 in 1,054,267. Your chances of being struck by lightning are 1 in 600,000 (nation-wide).

Also, I can find a car show somewhere in the DFW area every weekend during the summer months if I want to. There's many speed shops, builders and other suppliers. There's several dragstrips.

The cars don't rust very quickly because the roads aren't salted so there is plenty of old cars to be found. I just bought a 20 year old OT car for $300. I'll probably drive it for another 3 or 4 years. You can find very decent older daily driver for $2000. I haven't made a car payment in years but then I'm not easily embarrassed by what I drive.

Best of all, most of the people will wave back, make eye contact, smile, talk with you, etc. If you are outside the metroplex, most of the roads have wide shoulders on them. It's customary and polite to pull to the right side of the road to let the faster cars pass - especially if there's a line of them. Texans are friendly because they're predominantly Christians.

texAss sux. i finally got out and moved to florida but unfortunately florida sux too. just the weather is better.... but if you MUST live in texASS, move to fort worth. it's within driving distance of denton but has a real, western town flavor. the women aren't all big-haired like in dallASS.

  25. Lived in FTW for about 6 years. Passed through Denton quite a bit on the way back to Missouri. Seems like a pretty good town. I can't really add to what has already been said.

I appreciated not having to deal with state income tax. I also appreciated the mild winter. There were a few freak ice storms and it snowed on Easter one year but for the most part the stuff melts off in a matter of a day or two.

But the heat in July and August is INTENSE! When I moved there my A/C on my daily driver didn't work and I just about had a heat stroke in July/August. I found myself figuring out how to work on an A/C system.

Tornados....they happen. I live in Kansas now which has a reputation for tornados but honestly I had more run-ins with tornados when I lived in FTW. Had a few close calls around my house there but no direct hits. You learn that it's just a risk you take. Saw plenty of tornados in MO growing up as well.

Housing is relatively inexpensive. You can get a new fully bricked 3-4 bdrm, 2000 sq ft home w/2car garage for around $130k or less. Property taxes can be relatively high though so do your research if you plan on buying a home. With the abundance of houses a lot of times you can find homes for rent for roughly what you would pay in a mortgage payment.

i too moved from the detroit area to texass circa 1977. the winters in north texASS suck but the summer is worse. and there IS definitely a change of seasons. i don't know what you're talking about.... when i first moved down there with mich plates, the PIG SHIT would pull me over just to ask me if i was "working". and "friendly" my ass. they had bumper stickers all over their trucks telling yankees to leave. then the gas glut hit and they didn't talk so brave anymore... the area is FUGLY with the exception of some areas of fort worthless and the BIG-GOV and HIGH-TAXES everywhere but that's all over the country thanks to turd politicians..... vote libertarian!

I'm not a native Texan. But as the saying goes, "I got here as quick as I could". We've been down here since 1969, smartest thing I ever did. As someone else said, There is anything you want here in the D/FT area, and the other drivers don't waive at you with one finder. It not quite as Friendly or as courteous as it was 20 years ago, folks have gotten in a hurry. You can go to several car shows on a weekend between March and November. There are tons of other non vehicle and social related activities. Just about any sport or hobby your interested in as something in the area going on. BUT, Mountains!!!!!!!!!!!!!!nah. There are some high hills up in Oklahoma that are kinda pretty. Or you could go down the Big Bend. but I think Colorado is closer. To us folks that have adopted this Great State, there is -- NO WHERE ELSE BUT TEXAS.
