I am running two Stromberg 94 carburetors that need rebuilt on a 50 Mercury Flathead motor. I have been trying to find someone in about a 50 mile radius from Columbus that's good at rebuilding carburetors. Can anyone recommend someone?
There are very few of us old carburetor rebuilders left. There is some fellow up in New England, Daytona Parts in Florida, The old Carb Doctor in North Carolina, Red Bow Restorations in Texas, John in St. Louise (think he's still in business), These are the ones I'm aware of that can do you a good job. Whatever you do, pick someone that runs the finished carburetor. Or at least flow test it like The Ole Carb Doctor. Those damn things are just as capable of HATE as any human you have ever come across.. Are they Stromberg 97s? If not then they are probablyFord?Holley 94s.
It is black magic and voodoo to rebuild a carburetor....... Dickmaster27 has all the new parts that are e85 compatible. The hard part will be removing the check ball and clip in the pump well, and removing the nozzle needle if it is stuck in the bore. If the shaft is loose in the housing, get a new shaft. The accelerator pump arm is sometimes hard to pop out of the shaft. Don't bend the shaft. After I bend the first one I made a tool from a slip joint pliers that prevents the shaft from bending and pops out the pump arm. You have to start somewhere........
Piece of cake, if you've ever done a carb before. I just did 2 this morning before work, Make sure you have all the passages clear because a lot of gunk can get in there in 60 years. It also doesnt hurt to have a spare to rob parts offa
Only if you want to learn and are willing to take a chance that if you do have problems you can get it fixed. I bet you fell on your ass a few times when you learned to walk but you mastered it. There is one thing for sure if you farm everything out you won't learn how things work and how to fix them. Don't be skeered. We all started the same way dumb as an anvil.
PM or call Dickster27. Buy some kits from him and rebuild yourself. He's a very nice guy who's very knowledgeable and doesn't mind helping a guy out. It's not hard to do and if you have 94's, you'll eventually have questions on the power valve size. Balancing of course will be another issue but, that's not hard either. Dick will set you straight.
I have 3 on my 55 truck and the rebuild was pretty easy...i got some gp sorensen kits from advance auto parts for like 15 bux a piece...just need to get a couple different size power valves from vintage speed or dickster. I am down in cincy if you got some questions feel free to PM me...
I ended up with a rebuild kit from napa and got it done in a couple hours. i think i got 1st timers luck - popped it on the car and made a couple quick adjustments and it seems just fine. car runs much better now. HOWEVER i didn't chage out the the check ball - looked like something i would mess up or lose so i skipped it - not sure if the car is going to explode or ???? I just sprayed the area out so..... wish me luck - the 52-54 ford shop manual was a big big help - thanks everyone for the help - thanks for the article damaged duck - this site rules
