These numbers were at the top: 42M14L Block casting number is C3DE-6015-E which means that it's out of a 63 Falcon, however it's in a 62 Fairlane now. I know that 200 were introduced mid year in 1963. I just need to know if I have a 170 or 200, it would nake life so much easier when buying parts. Thanks for your help
i have a 200 in my falcon. 5 freeze plugs. 144/170 like above have only three. that's how you can tell if it's a 200 or not. if you want a 200 get one after 1965, they have 7 mains. 63-64 have only four mains
Not entirely true "The 200 engine model was introduced in the middle of 1963 and shared the four main bearing design used in the 170 engine. Early 200s can be identified by three freeze (core) plugs on the side of the block. Beginning in 1965 the 200 CID engines were upgraded to seven main bearings to reduce harmonic vibrations and increase durability. The 1965 and later engine can be identified by 5 freeze (core) plugs on the side of the block and the casting code C5DE-H. Starting in 1966 a six bolt bell housing flange block was introduced." I did some searching and stand corrected. all 200's had 5 freeze plugs as stated before. early 200's had 4 main bearings, later had 7 main. look in this thread about half way down. http://www.tffn.net/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=21585&view=next There is also tons more info here: http://mustangtek.com/FordDecode.html To answer you're question you can't tell. the numbers go like this: C 60 (as in 1960's) 3 3 (as in 1963) D falcon E engine 6015 engine block E fourth revision The casting numbers don't say displacement. you need the VIN off the original car to find that or pull the heads and mike the bores. Now if it does have 5 freeze plugs then it is a 200 but if it has 3 it could be either the 144 or 170
My Fairlane has a 200 out of a 64 Falcon and it has 5 freeze plugs on the passenger side. I know for a fact its a 200. It came out of an original low mileage Falcon. fordsix.com has all the answers and more on these engines plus hop up parts.
Blades the good news is most everything external to a 170 and 200 interchenge. ALL 200 engines have 5 casting/freeze plugs some ot the earlier 200's didn't have 7 main bearings but they all had 5 casting plugs.
I did more searching 170=3 plugs 200=5plugs. 200 and 250 freeze plugs are 1 3/4". 144-170 freeze plugs are 2 1/8". The freeze plugs aren't in a row the last is up by the starter and the front is up higher also -_ _ _- Most all basic parts interchange. There were 3 different carbs offered on the 6 cyl and 2 distributors. So if you order a Pertronix kit you have to know which distributor you have. One cap cost $40 the other cost $10 65 the 200 got 7 mains 66 the 170 got 7 mains Good Luck!
Maybe I should just put a big ass 534 out of a 1958 Super duty truck in it! Super charger and all. Ha ha ha! Maybe not, wouldn't want to see it launched in to space
To Quote Rocket Sled "Not entirely true The 200 engine model was introduced in the middle of 1963 and shared the four main bearing design used in the 170 engine. Early 200s can be identified by three freeze (core) plugs on the side of the block"
Yes but if you look at my next post ,#6, i changed it. the info i posted in my first thread I got from Wikipedia and was the only place i found that said anything about early 200's having 3 freeze plugs. every other bit of info i found said that ONLY the 170 and 144 had 3 freeze plugs. all the 200's and larger had 5. In fact if you go to the link i posted in post #6 there is a pic of an early 200 with 5 freeze plugs and only 4 mains not 7 as in the later 200's So if you have 3 it's a 170, if you have 5 it's a 200.
I got all this info from fordsix.com and these guys know everything about everything on these motors. My 200 is an early block. It has 3 large freeze plugs on the side of the block and 2 small freeze plugs above the 1st and last large plugs. The small plugs are hard to see behind the exhaust man and are about 3/4" in size. I haven't found the block numbers yet to see exactly what year it is. Late 63 or 64.
Well if anyone is looking for a damn sweet 200 let me know . Helping a friend do a Mustang where the owner wants to change everything over to a 289 . We took the engine in trade in and runs like new . Only 50,000 miles on the engine ! Has a C4 with it but not sure if that will be sold either . So if you are looking for a great Ford 200 , 6 cylinder send me a PM and I will get you all the details . You won't be sorry with this strong running 200 ! Retro Jim
Anyone have a picture of a 170 showing it's freeze plugs? I'm on my way to car now to get better pictures of my motor.
Ford's Small Six engine family members featured, until 1964, cast-on identification codes. These codes -- an "N" for 144 engines and a "T" for 170 engines -- were cast on the road draft tube mounting boss. After 1964, Ford started using metal tags to identify engines. Printed on these tags were the engine's displacement; the model year, its change level; the date it was manufactured; and its engine code number.
That is a 170 block NO DOUBT! There were NEVER any 3 freeze plug 200's period. I have have owned over 100 Falcon's not counting the Comet's Fairlane's and Mustang's I have had and in 25 years of working on these cars I have yet too see a 3 freeze plug 200.
My fellow car loving friends, I bring an end to the "what engine do I have" chapter in my life. I took Ricks Garage info and went out to my car and sprayed, scraped, and wiped. The verdict.... 170!!!!! Oh well I love that car! Many many thanks for all the info fellas. Glad to be a part of such a place
Hello. I picked up what I was told a 200ci... This motor has the plugs that you describe... 3 big freeze plugs on the side and the 3/4 inch plugs behind the exhaust manifold...except I see 3 small plugs.... Any idea on this....info is very confusing on the web..in relation with early 200 vs 170 etc...tia
Drive it. That'll tell you real quick. 200 makes it a veritable rocket ship in comparison. ...he said, yelling into the deep and dark time tunnel.
