I have been looking into some of these cl***es (sunchaser tools, lazze, john kelly), anybody here gone to these? which would you recommend?
There's an article in this months "Hot Rod" about Lazze's cl***. Pretty neat. At the end of the year someone that took the cl*** wins a roadster that was built during the cl*** itself..
I always ask people that ask about cl***es, what do you want to learn? What tools do you have or are going to have. If you have a planishing hammer, you might not get a lot out of a cl*** that is taught using an English Wheel. I haven't been to John Kelly's cl***es, but John is a friend and is very capable. I've been to some of Ron Covell's cl***es, have also attended a couple of Lazze's cl***es, attended a Wray Schelin cl***, a Fay Butler cl*** and a Clay Cook cl***.
Are you the one building the bumper cars? There is also a program at UVU. That would give you all the skill you need.
I have taken the cl*** that Ron Fouriner dose and the cl*** that Dagger Tools puts on. Both were lots of fun and I learned a lot in both of them. I would recommend ether of them. Both of them were bag/hammer and English wheel based. Tom
A young friend of mine did a multi day cl*** at Lazze and really liked it and learned alot. He brought home a 34 rear qtr panel that he made in cl*** that was very nice. Must have helped him as he works for Zane Cullen at the Cotatti Speed Shop now. Rex
Nope, VonMoldy is the peddle car man. i Cant go to a full time college 4 hours from my home, i have obligations to my family, house, and a job to worry about.
Jim Beam, Ron Covell is coming to Utah (actually Salt Lake) this Month (April 18-19-Showcase Rods & Customs)-you might consider it (it costs $190 per day (Saturday & Sunday)-
The Lazze cl***es sound great, but unless you're planning to buy the tools you're learning to use I'm not sure how useful it would be. I plan to hit John Kelley some time in the next couple years (if only life wouldn't keep interfering with my plans!)
I know I'm a day late & a dollar short on this topic but I was wondering how you guys made out on recent cl***es? I've recently spoke to both Ken Yamamoto & Wray Schelin and I think I'm taking Wray's cl*** in April or May. Ken Yamamoto wants $6400 for 3 days... and no food! Yes, $6400 for 3 days. He says he doesn't want to train the hobbyist anymore and is going after bodyshops. He is a greedy SOB that guy. Wray on the other hand, is charging a decent fee, about a grand for 3 days... and you get some food! haha... Just saying. Anyway, there's another thread somewhere discussing this very topic. Later- nasd90
You should enjoy his cl***, be prepared for some long days. When I was there, the day started about 8:30AM and went to about 2AM.
I took the Gene Winfeld cl***, and Lazze was a student in it! Take Gene's cl*** if you can. It is a wealth of information. Take every cl*** from everyone you can. Every moment is an opportunity to learn something new.
Wray Schelin is an artist. He's also built almost all of his own tools and has some crazy stuff in his shop.
What he said...... Gene's cl*** was awesome....It really got me started. It was great meeting Lazze too. I'm saving up to take cl***es from him.
That is the best advice and how I try to live everyday. I just FEDEX'd Wray Schelin the deposit for the cl***. I'm excited and yeah I heard there were long days. I'm good as long as there's coffee! haha... Thanks a bunch fella's and if you're ever in Tallah***ee... nasd90
This is great advice. Everyone does this stuff differently, so as many guys that you can learn from the better education you will get.
What I did as well. I've done Step 1 and Step 2 with Lazze, the Gene Winfield weekend, and even Evan Wilcox's cl*** at the Crucible in Oakland. I describe the experience like martial arts - Judo and Karate are very, very different, but in the end, the results are the same: some kicked ***.
