The trans in my 60 Pontiac leaks pretty good, but works great. I'm leary to have someone take it apart to seal it up and **** something up
most atf already has a seal swelling agent in it, iirc. i never had any luck myself, but only tried once in a th350. it was pretty easy to do seals though.
Someone...Someone? That someone is YOU! Get in there and do it. Whats the worst that can happen? Besides that fixing your own stuff ****s. What trans is in a 60 pontiac, Hydra-matic?
I don't know these ******s. The torque converter comes apart in pieces before you can even get to the front seal. A seal that's usually exposed by merely pulling the torque converter straight out on most trans
Had a C6 Ford ****** that had sat for 15 years after being rebuilt. Put it in a car and it leaky like a sieve. Put in some stop leak **** from Pep Boys and it stopped after about 50 miles. ****** shop buddy says the seals had got hard and this stuff softened it. Also said it won't stop leaks in worn seals or worse yet bad bushings
The only stuff I have had any luck with is the stop-leak that Lucas puts out. Had a 700r4 that leaked out the front seal pretty bad. As long as I put this stuff in it, it stopped leaking while driving, but would leak if it sat for a week or two. Robert
Having owned a shop for many years and tried most of the snake oils over the years I found only one transmission additave that actually worked. Its called TF 500 and I believe it was made my solder seal but not positive and it was a few years ago.
I used brake fluid in a car years ago just so it would hold fluid to get it home, when I dis***embled the ****** the seals all but exploded into 100 times there normal size, imagine the dehydraded toys you add water to and they grow from dime sized to basketball size.
most "stop leak" products do the same thing. Groucho, call the shop. we can get that ****** sealed up just right. 310-973-5019
Groucho, a good friend of the family, disabled, has a 96 Jeep with a few little leaks and some slipage. The Cherokee had a small drain plug in the ****** pan, and we drained out approx. 3 quarts. Added the Lucas Transmission Fix product, and topped off the fluid, by the end of the week, the gentleman claimed it was better than when new. That was almost 30,000 miles ago.
those transmissions have a gasket that goes between the two peices of the fluid coupler (torque converter) if that gasket has worn out, that would be the leak, wich means that the stop leak mite not work, that is the case with the hydro in my 55 pontiac, i tryed it in mine.
i never had luck with any pour in potion, clean the underside and try to isolate the leak, it could be as simple as tightening the pan or dipstick o-ring.
I have used KW Trans-X with some success for leaks and shift problems. If it doesn't cure it, the trans will at least be very clean when you take it apart.
Good to know. I've been hearing good things about Lucas. I buy their ZDDP by the case. Why did you drain 3 qts? I looked there first. That part's dry.
The 3 qts is just what came out from opening the drain plug. Quite frankly I expected more. The owner had the original owners manual, and it specified at 105,000 to do just that. Remove the drain plug and replace what fluid comes out without dropping the pan. Just a recommended service. With the 1 quart of Lucas, I believe it took 2 1/3 additional quarts to fill. I'm sure you know, hold your foot on the brake and run through each gear with the engine idling pausing a few seconds in each gear. I go through this for 3 cycles back and forth, and finish with checking the fluid a final time.
Sorry Groucho but somebody has to be the smart ****............ The best stop leak I have found is a re-build kit, just drop it in and presto! No more leaks. Doc. PS, while we are talking about transmissions, anyone know where my third gear went??
Yes, I agree. BUT, around here that's about $1800......on a trans that only leaks...BUT WORKS PERFECT. Not to mention, I have a 50-50 chance of someone ****ing my trans up. Seems most, if not all the real guys that KNOW these ******s have died or retired. Also, the couple places that will rebuild for almost $2K will NOT stand behind their work. Before I do all that ****, I'll contact Pat @ Wilcap and convert to a TH 350
My advice is put seals in it ,I did use brake fluid in a trans ,I added too much and screwed up a trans ,Thats the old school way to swell seals.......Just dont add to much
I put new seals in mine and even with Lucas, the thing still leaks when it sits around for very long. I've tried other brands too with similar or worse results on other vehicles. In my opinion it's all snake oil.
Groucho, the front seal on my Slim Jim leaked and a local shop (one that had been there for three generations), dropped it, replaced the seal and had it back in in under 2 hours. I dont think it's that big of deal once it's out of the car. We also dropped the pan and checked the bands while we had it out. Everything looked good so we replaced the filter $80!!! and it worked great till I sold it 7 years later.
Damn Groucho they really want to sting you for it, then wont stand behind there work? Thats just crazy! I was kidding on the re-build kit though, I dont know that much about auto's I have only ever had one and that was in a daily driver that was only a few years old. Do you guys get Wynn's products over there? If so I have heard good things about there stop leak. Good luck with it mate. Doc.
