What a great way to spend time with your son ! I did the same thing with my car build. There's not a part on my (his) car that he hasn't sanded 3 times ! I knew I was going to spend time with him at least 3 nights a weeks and look forward to that. He is now 30 years old and can take the rod anytime he wants. I fugure it is his car I am just gonna borrow it till I die ! Enjoy your time with your son, that's what this hobby is about ! NOT a trophy...

Damn that's cool, I've had my oldest son weld a bit, and do a few other little chores, but he's not into body work, yet....

It's never too early. That little guy is gonna absorb some skills in your shop! One day we wake up and they're all grown up.

    That is cool!

I remember when I was a kid and my dad was painting cars in our garage. The only time I remember "helping" him when I was around that age, I put some paint remover on the door of his pickup with the brush he had been using. He was using it on a Corvette so I just figured I might give him a head start on his pickup just in case he wanted to paint it. :D

Actually, spending time with my dad building cars was probably the best times we spent together. I am starting the same thing with my boys now.

Awesome! Looks like a great kid and he will be a far better man for having learned how to build hot rods as a youth.

Don't be too hard on yourself if once he turns 16 he decides he'd rather spend less time on the cars and more time on the girls and PS3.. sigh. Does it SOUND like I'm speaking from experience?! The light at the end of the tunnel is.. even tho' he doesn't spend much time in the shop with me anymore he still has a great fondness and enthusiasm for the older cars.. thinks all new cars are ****..! So you are planting seeds that will reap great benefits in the future. I know that once the teenage "brain fog" clears that he'll be back in the shop bending wrenches! Keep up the good work!

    Jim,
That's awesome!! He's going to have more skills when he's 10 then I do at 37! Great time to spend together and p*** along your know-how. He'll be doing the same thing with his children too now. Let's you have some good time to influence him in the right way and sure beats the hell out of him wasting away in front of video games.

Yes...I'm up for adoption if you're looking for another "kid"!!

That is great to have him out in the garage with you. My daughter , 5 keeps helping out when I am out there. She really wants to start on the 50. Hopefully my son ,7 will want to come out when he sees her out helping me come spring.

My son is almost 4 and is all about trying to help. Usually his help ends up in missing tools, but I still love it. I can't wait till he gets his hands dirty with me. As a dad nothing else comes close. Love your pics!

Love it. I have a buddy that has a 8 an 9 year old boy and girl. The two are always in the middle when we start working on a project.
Last time I was over the lil J (girl) was taking pieces of metal and as she says " I'm building a house!" She was serious. She said she needed a weld her and there and the roof would be on.

That's awesome! I had a lot of missed opportunities with my older daughters (14 & 12 now), but I'm trying to reel them back in to spark their interest. When they were younger and more interested in helping, I was in a hurry and would give them menial tasks that made them lose interest too quickly. With my 5 year old, I work much harder to find things for her to do that make her feel like she's really helping. Of course, she's a tough negotiator so after car work we usually play cars, or dolls:eek:, or ride bikes... It flies by, gotta make the make the most of it. I'll have more time later. Hoping to p*** this stuff on...
