Putting an aluminum PG behind my 305 and I'm looking for a good floor shifter that won't break the bank or break itself. I've heard stories about the Lokar and their infamous "button", I've heard about Gennie going under and have found it hard to find their PG shifter on the interwebs, so what's another good one or place I can find a good one? Ideas, opinions?

Try SHIFTWORKS on the internet. They seem to have everything.

Time to look on that auction site we all know and love. Not many are really in the market for a stock floor shift for a Powerglide, most want an after market shifter. There are some cheap shifters made for the roundy-round, circle track cars, and you could get the Powerglide neutral safety switch dragsters use that connect to the trans shifter arm. Just do a "Powerglide shifter" seach on the Bay. Butch/56sedandelivery.

I put a Lokar in my current coupe build, on a 700R4. It wasn't a pain and it adjusted up for proper shifts just fine.
But whether to use a Lokar, Gennie, Mustang etc is up to the individual...

  13. soooo it wasnt a powerglide you put your shifter on????
    right ....
i have put them on th350's and others but it was a pain in the ass on the powerglide

Maybe a little tip to help you shopping for that powerglide shifter. A couple years ago I was building a car with a powerglide in it. I went on ebay looking for a shifter. There were very few powerglide specific shifters, and they always brought a premium. Well I finally bought a hurst shifter for more than I wanted to spend. And what I found was it was the same as the 3 speed auto shifters, with a block off plate screwed in over the last gate. So just buy any three speed shifter. And leave the powerglide specific ones to the others.

I also used a Vega shifter in my 36 Willys 4 banger w/PG, they are good in street rods and fairly inexpensive. Just look in junk yards that have older GM PG cars. You really can,t beat original GM stuff in applications like these.

yup, most race inspired shifters are clunky and somewhat a pain to operate, I try to find a oem style shifter for use on an automatic.

lokar/mustang/genie style shifters are not much better.

    Another question, then.....

I thought that the stock floor shifters for PG's actually mounted to the floorboard, not the top of the trans the way the aftermarket ones (Gennie, Lokar, etc) do. Is that correct?

I only found one place that had the Gennie PG shifter on their site, called them, they very politely told me the horror stories about getting stuff from Gennie to be true. XP

Yes they mount to the floor and most have a cable so mounting is fairly easy.

Ah, that's unfortunate. It's going in my A build, so I wanted to find one that mounts to the trans, instead.

I looked at Shiftworks, but they say on the site that they're currently developing one for PG's. Looks like they did a variation on the Lokar button.
