Hy Flatty Guys, over the last years i bought some old original speed parts for the old 59A-B Flathead. for two weeks i beginn the restoration from my old free turning Flatty. The Flatty have no cracks and looking verry good in the inside. know i need to build a org. history Performance Flathead and need a little help! i need to lighten the Crankshaft and a full Port on the Block. Polish and weigh balanced at the Con. Rods, Alu/Bronce Flywheel and balanced at the complete rotation parts! (The Engine will build for the Street) Know i need some Information with Pics, measure, degrees....... Thanks Marco
For longevity I suggest you buy one of the stroker kits available. The old cranks and rods out there have had hundreds of thousands of miles put on them and most flattys die with broken rods, cracked blocks ect. These kits have every thing needed other than cam and lifters and there pre balanced and over all the best bang for the bucks. There are many articles on here that has other information so all you need to do is a search and most likely you will find what you seek.
you should begin with some good books like joe abbins blown flathead; bill fishers speed manual; tex smiths car tech (complete ford flathead engine manual; and importantly ron hollerans nostalgia. get some good reading in and then proceed. the diagrams you want will likely be in the books too. good luck and have fun.
Hy theres some diagramms in this Books!? Cool i dont like to buy some new parts. i need the old stock parts an will build a engine with History! Ok i have new rods, .030 ovrsize alu Pistons.... but all N.O.S! My Engine comes from a acident car. This Car was Crashed for 15 Years and standing all this years in a barn Garage! The man says the Engine get a Rebuilt for 2500 Miles! I open now this Engine and i think íts True! All inside Parts in good shape. Old and a little Rusty but ok!
History or not! I would suggest you do as mentioned abow, buy as mutch new parts as possible!! You will not regret this! For all the speed secrets, just take some time and seartch this forum, and buy all the books that you can get hold of. Then you make your own oppinion, that`s the fun part of building a Flathead! Vola` there you have your own history Start with this thread, it`s exlent; http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=420484 ................................. Taildragger&fenderless
X2 The books will get you there, and a knowledgeable flathead machinist. Also search the HAMB, this site is a treasure trove of opinion and fact. Through the many and various (sometimes vigourous) discussions, you will be able to form your own opinions and judgements based on a library of unsurpassed knowledge both practical and theoretical. Good luck.
I Read this Tread interested for two weeks! I Buyed some Flathead Books yesterday. Today i beginning with the Porting from the Engine or with the flow optimization! I looking for some tricks at the last 5 Years, but i see here a special oil hole drilling, and there a port on the valve lifters!? i was a little cowed but now i think its time to build this Engine! In ower Buisness i build Performance Engines but the Flathead Engines is another League!
