Pretty well roached out, but in 2011 to see a car from the 50's still drug into a predominatly late model salvage yard is crazy,in a few more years it wont even happen,as its a rare case now. maybe it will live on in other cars or customs.
The pull-a-part here in Louisville has a special section for classic iron. Not much in there worth bragging about at the moment, but it is nice that they at least make an effort to pull them to the side.
During the reign of one manager our charlotte location had a "vintage section" but new managment got rid of it,...he didnt like setting enough cars around until he had enough for a new row, and the rows would stay on the yard for months. (which i felt made sure every usable part was removed before crushing) now they just mingle them in with other cars.Does make for a treasure hunt feeling. Over the years some good stuff has gone thru, i will have to dig up some of my pictures. The 54 panel, i looked hard at the rear door...but the inslde is so roached its barly on the hinges. Other then maybe hanging on a wall, not much use. The tailight lens were pretty decent, i like the fact they were dated 54. unlike repops i would imagine. the car was last registered in 67-68, by todays standards that would have been a pretty decent driver to be parked. sorta like a 98 or 99 van.
Grille teeth, rear window glass and surround trim and probably the panel door hinges would all be great resale items off of this car, would be a shame for the car to get crushed with those intact. The rear bumper guards are probably panel/station wagon only as well. Not much else I can see that'd be worth grabbing, but interesting to see it.
I saw a Stude in the one in Louisville year or 2 ago. Pretty rough shape, it's to bad they won't let you buy a whole car from them.
so long as the skin is HALF salvageable, the guts can be fab'd up... metalshapes would have that thing buffed out in 3 days with nothing more than a propane torch, pliers, and a rusty old "tuff stuff" kids hammer
well, let us also note that its phantom, not fantom... but, its too nice a night to bust his balls for his HAMB name choice
There are the hubs, drums and backing plates to convert someone's I beam AD Chevy pickup to five on 4-3/4. Sometimes one has to die so several others can live.
here in socal you would be suprized what we see in the local pick a part. me and a few felow car buddies go at least once a month on half off day and there was a '54 more door there once, currently 2 corvairs. we have gotten 6 'vair steering boxes there in the last year or so, 2 aluminum and 4 steel, seen a '41 dodge, 46' crysler, '48 chevy truck, '52 International, '59 F100 with a Y block, '62 ranchero, and lots of early to mid 60's cars and trucks all makes just to name a few that I remember. just last weekend I found a chevy truck manual bellhousing with the clutch fork on the pass side and a boss for a slave cyl.
Had a pretty decent 54 2door here at a local yard for 600$ that was in a whole lot better shape, even included a roached out tuck and roll.
Our local Pull-a-part always has a few older 50's/ 60's cars and trucks. They too had a "vintage" row but now they just put them out with the rest. Gotta be on top of it, nothing sits there more then a few weeks and they get stripped fast, anything worth while is gone in a day or two. Kills me sometimes to see what people get rid of sometimes I have to admit.A while back I looked at a 58 Ford F-100 for sale, guy was "firm" at $1500. I would of gave him $800 or so, no problem, $1500 seemed ok but I didn't need it that bad. Month later it's at Pull-a-part, I know they didn't give him more the a couple hundred for it. Go figure. Yeah, ours won't sell a complete car but my buddy managed to get get a 66 Chevy 1/2 ton crew cab out of there. Just had to dissassemble it there and buy it in pieces over the course of a few days. Just took the crew cab only parts and will have to put them on another 66 truck so he can title it. They are picking up a 54 Dodge I have Monday morning. I can't store it and after taking all the parts I wanted (including the Hemi) I figured at least going to the Pull-a part other guys will pilfer the poor old thing of all the good parts before the rusty hulk is crushed. Better the selling it to a scrapper I figured.
went down this morning when they opended, the rear glass MIA, the grille teeth MIA. the rear bumper guards rusted out on the underside. From 2 pm saturday to 8 am sunday....geeeeeeooooneee. what i could find 1 of 8255 IIRC made, this one came factory blue. inline 6 as its laying the cargo area fisher body number 6466.
I'll have every bit of stainless off that thing and in the "Save" pile in no time. Pick it clean and make yourself some money.
Rear door, beltline stainless and front seats are big, big money off those cars. Doesn't matter if the door's rough, if you don't have one, no one makes repops. (I see the belt stainless is gone on this one). Oldies like that still turn up occasionally in our pick n pull yards. I have some pieces nabbed off a '50 Pontiac I got last summer; two years before I got some pieces out of a '51 in a different yard. A couple of them do save the better cars, though - would you believe a pretty decent '66 GTO was in the prep area one day? They sold it whole to another guy who deals in vintage stuff. A real live GTO, not rotty, just looked like it had been sitting a while. Another yard got a decent '66 Cutlass wagon with factory air - paint needed to be buffed out, but other than that it was fine. A decent '63 Chrysler convertible turned up, too - even had top cloth in it - and that one for some reason they set a car on top of and messed all up. People take them there because it's easier than putting up with all the bullshit of trying to sell them to "car people" -
Hey Fantom_Hurse, you should have beat the manager with a baseball bat and told him his prices were too high, or used the magnum, or the rocket launcher on him! Hahah. Love the avatar, great movie!
I guess someone else out there thinks like me. Actually makes me feel better about it to know that nothing good on it is going to go to waste.
If you can cut the roof off just below the beltline someone could use it on a sedan delivery build, or extended cab pickup project.
i bet someone from the iron lords,as they are local, popped on that stuff. i did a google image search, darn those things make for some sa-wheat rides. thought about cutting the roof off..... but all i was "trying to do was get home" dfen
Not that I'm aware of. Cool find. I haven't been there for a long time. May be time to go. BloodyKnuckles
I was there Thursday and it wasn't on the yard yet. It was still in the fenced in area. They got pretty ill with me last time I walked in there!
is pull-a-part a chain of junk yards or is that just a way to refer to one. we got a few junk yards here in my town but i have never heard them referred to as pull-a-part
My local yard had the cars sitting on top of stacked and welded wheels going back to 1940.... So for a few weeks i bought out all their SS trim rings that were in good shape for $2.50 a pop I probably had 40 rings from 1940 through 48...
