Hy Flathead Guys, I have a little question! Are the Main, Rod,and Cam Bearings in the 59 A-B the same as in the later 8ba? what is with the Horsepower? is this all the same? i see everewhere 95Hp or 100Hp or 80Hp! To time i dont know the size what i need. Thanks Marco
The crankshaft, rods, and rod bearings are different. The 59a had "floating" bearings that each served two rods. The 8BA has conventional insert bearings. If a 59a has been rebuilt it may have been changed over to a later setup. Most in Canada were done that way.
ah ok! and the crankshaft? is that the same? i know the cam is not the same with the other distributer drive gear system!
8ba crank have two oilholes in the crankpin 59a have one you can use the 8ba in a 59 block and a 59a in a 8ba block but then you have to use the 59 rods and bearings
And...then main bearing differences are on the BLOCK side, not the crank side, so that cranks can be swapped easily. The Canadian locked bearings on early engines are a DIFFERENT design, not the same in any way as 8BA's. Pretty sure some late 59's got the 8BA style crank and rods in production as a cost cutting/rationalization move...both engines were in full production during 1948, and I think the factory noticed that the supply line could be simplified anf the 59 made for a couple dollars less.
Ok! Today i look the Calibration from The Org. Crank and it is ok! i was a little unsure. ther was a little broken point from the Crankshaft and i still have a good 8Ba Crank at Home! Thanks for all your Replays! Marco Can Closed
Another thing different is the cam drive, the two setups are opposite cuts on the gears. You use the crank gear that matches the cam you are using.
