Will a 354 Chrysler hemi fit in a stock '32, with stock steering, wishbones, firewall, and crossmember using an adapter to the '39 trans with radiator/grille in stock location? I know the hoodsides would need to be left off. Pics would be appreciated. Thanks.

  2. No not a chance.
Modify the firewall, Chevy Water Pump on the front of the engine saves a couple of inches.

    HemiDeuce,

I love your car. Can you tell me how much your firewall is laid back and if your front crossmember is in the stock location?

    Thanks,

    Randy

I'm interested in this also. I just picked up a recessed firewall for my 5w and I have 331 with a 6x2 on top to go in it. I might set the engine back 12-18" into the cowl in the end because it's going to be more of a drag car but just in case I'd like to know some tricks!

You can figure it out with some measurements. You don't want to move the trans so you know where the front of the trans is. I can give you the thickness of the adapter and you can measure the engine length. I predict the end of the waterpump and the radiator will co-habituate.

I know you're probably right, Andy. Leaving my '39 tranny in place is my biggest limiting factor. If I want to do that, I should go with a shorter hemi or a 265/283. Anyone have a 241/270/315 Dodge hemi for sale?

A 265 in that thing would be killer!!!! As much as I love a hemi and will have one in my dream '32 5w, if you are concerned with ease of swap with out getting into a full all out build then a 265/283 would be the best option! E.C. here on the hamb could build you a HEMI killer out of a 265 chevy.

    I'm just saying....

A friend of mine went to Pigeon Forge with us to the Shades of the Past 2010 ... and he caught the dreaded DEUCE FEVER We all know there is no known cure for it ... so he had to get himself a 32 Ford.

Here is his 32 ... in the project stage. The HEMI is a Desoto. He bought all the adapters and stuff from Bob Walker @ Hot Heads. The 32 has a Turbo 350 and a Chevy water pump riser made by ZIPS. The rest is typical 32 roadster build. 9 inch Ford, bigs and littles and a dropped axle. He went with a Uni-Steer rack to help with clearance for the steering shaft.

The Desoto is a 291 ... and the fan just clears the 4 core Walker " Z " series radiator.

Here is a thread about his HEMI 32

  11. My front cross member is in the stock location and I modified the lower right side of the firewall about 1 1/2" and the lower left side about 3/4" where the valve cover and ignition wire cover project rear ward.
Attached are a couple of pictures of the modified firewall.
In my opinion nothing looks worse than a hacked up 32 firewall, so I tried to maintain the look of the original firewall by retaining the strengthening ribs etc.

On making SBCs and 270 Dodge Hemis' AND stock 32 Firewalls play nice together. I have a 56 SBC mated to a 39 trans with a Zips W/P riser. I did not touch the stock firewall, I am using a small Mallory dist. It has a 3" in drop front end with uncut wishbone. We took a 2.5" by 4" chunk out of the front crossmember to clear the crank pulley, runs stock full hood. I'm now building a 32 frame with a 55 270 Dodge Hemi. It's mated to a 39 trans and a cast iron W/P riser. It clears the stock firewall (just barely). We made up a 3/4"spacer at the trans mount to move the engine forward a little. Now clears the firewall with mucho room to spare. Repro frt Xmember so no clearence issues there. Clears the radiator no problem, even with the 3/4" spacer. 3" drop font end with uncut wishbone We did have to take a small 1" by 2.5" chunk out of one side of the bones. No stock hood sides on this one . I'll post some pics when I get the frame back together. It's apart to be painted.

Great info. Where did you get the cast water pump riser for the 270?
