I have looked through tons of posts and pics and still cant decide. Ryans Rivi looked awesome with them, but I cant make out what his wheels were. Dirty Dans looked great with Astros and skinny white walls. So my question is on a black Rivi which would look better on Astros, WWW or skinny whites ? These would be on a set of Astros wheels most likely. The car will eventually be on bags and loose the antenna but that's probably all for body mods.

    Thanks

I wouldn´t - thats a weird anachronism IMHO. Skinny whites or red lines.

Yeah dude, wide whites don't really suite the 60's cruisers. Redlines are too muscle car-ish. For a slammed Rivi, you can't go wrong with skinny whites and Astros...but it is your car. Build what you want.

  4. Rivi's look good with WWW's, but WWW+Astros don't mix.

Astros+Pinner Whites, nothing else looks quite right on Astros.

I personally don't care for WWW's on 60's cars, and especially a Riviera. Rivi's were such sleek, modern looking cars, wide whites just seem to be the opposite. Thin whites on Astro's would be my pick -

Wide whites on anything newer than about '62 or '63 is out of whack. Actually, wide white walls on mags of any kind look pretty lame and contrived as the whitewall width was becoming narrower in 1961....:) That is only if you want it to look traditional. Otherwise, follow the goofy-looking, and stupid fads others seem to enjoy.

  8. I prefer the skinny's but there is a blue rivi with a blue panel and lace paint job with wide whites that looks killer. It is an Illinois car, I'm sure someone has a picture of it, I don't on this computer, it was a Rod n Custom car a couple years back.

How wide is considered wide? I really like these American cl***ics with a 1.6 inch whitewall that doesn't go all the way to the rim. How about a set of these on chrome smoothies? Or maybe some Vogues?
    Good luck whatever you decide.

I am NOT a big fan of WWW's on 60's cars, and I wouldn't have done it.....but this sorta works.

Ryan's wheels were the factory chrome wheels. Personally feel wide whites are out of place on a Riv - should be narrow or red line - or blackwall. But, its your car.....:)

  12. I too have a `64 Rivi and have wrestled with the whole wide white issue, I had a set of steel wheels powdercoated black and have spider caps to go with them, I was goin to run www on them when I was thinking about a satin black paint job. Plans change,I now have a set a buick ralley wheels and am thinking of running blackwalls, I love the look of Supremes and may go that route when threre is more cash. I would run a skinney whitewall with them. The best www/rim combo that I have seen is a chrome wheel with spider caps. Rod and Custom had one featured and is in their archives

Stick with the above pictured 1.6 whites and you can't go wrong. Forget about "redlines" they just don't work real well on kustoms; were originally used on GTO's, AMX's, and other pony/muscle cars.

I had redlines on my '67 Jag XKE...but that was where they really belonged; factory issued style. Not really too cool on a Rivi, BUT best of luck to you on whatever you choose. It's your Rivi & your checkbook !

Nope! If you gonna run Supremes pinner whites or bust.
1.6" wides are still ok, but def no wider.

If you erally wanna go w/ the wides find another kind of wheel.

I could see the Vogues as I mounted a lot of Vogues on Pontiacs in the early 70's when I worked in the Pontiac dealership in Waco, Tx. Good looking tires when you put them on a cl***y luxury style car and don't over do the wheel thing.
To me the cutoff year for wide whites should be the same as the factorys did as few of the newer cars look right with them.

Like I said...."sorta"....The OP needed an example of why NOT to do it,
and the Rivi I posted is a Grade A example of why. :D

I vote for Pinner whites and Radirs

WWW are cool but not perfect.

  20. Here's the one I was thinking of. It would look better with skinny's and astros, but I'd take it.

Well, the guy who designed the Riviera (Bill Mitchell,) had a chopped one with 3'' whitewalls, so go figure-

WWW are overused these days. Rivi's are too new for WWW, but the 1.6" shown above would look pretty good.

pinners on astros. no exceptions. those are the rules... follow them or face the consequences:cool:

Hey Bud, there's a great looking blue Riviera on the cover of Hemmings with WWW, and I think it looks awesome.. My opinion if you go with a white interior throughout then www looks great, if you dont then the thinner white walls....

Thanks for all the input guys if I go astros I'll do skinny whites, or maybe vogues they would look a little more up scale, but not sure they would "right"? If I were to do wide whites what is the opinion on the wheels and or caps they would flow with ? Thanks for all the help wheel and tire is so important I don't wanna blow it !

Interesting point, but it's because the Riv concept was designed in the late 50's before the tire companies narrowed the white and added the narrow black band next to the rim (maybe '61?).

The US Royal Master was the first narrow whitewall as an aftermarket item in about '59 and quickly became the tire of choice for many of the top pro-built customs of the '60-'63 period. They were horribly expensive, like well over a hundred bucks when the average whitewall was under $20.
