I bought this intake along with cal custom finned valve covers and an offy trans adapter for a 39 ford trans from a fellow hamber a while back. Well the 390 i have seems too far gone and so does the trans. So i found a 63 352 out of a galaxie 500. This manifold should bolt right up...right? Also what do you guys think about running a 39 trans behind it? Im building a 1927 ford coupe,27 ford tudo and a 30 es*** coupe. The motor will go in one of them.

The intake will fit the 352 just fine. and it will look great on there! Any FE will have no trouble breaking that ****** if you try.

i wanna see the FE in one of those rides. I'm building a 31 with a 390, and looked all over for a 6X2 setup, no luck, but did manage to find a M/T crossram which is almost as cool. That 6X2 on the FE will be way cool, don't know bout that ****** holding up to any abuse though.....

I don't think the trans will hold up very long at all unless you baby it.A FE has a lot of torque and you know you will punch it or you won't be on the HAMB/:):)

Well, you just missed one: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/e...0764598962&viewitem=&sspagename=STRK:MEWAX:IT

BTW, Jay Brown dyno tested one of these. I don't remember the numbers, but he was surprised at how well it did at making big peak power numbers compared to some modern intakes.

I would just get a "Top Loader" behind that and call it quits, no worries.

Yeah i looked for years for my intake. Got it on a good deal. Also ha and sold another y block 6x2 ans sold the second y block 6x2 i had. I will get to the 390 after my faielane is closer to being done. The toploaders are damn exspensive!!!

A good FE (even a 352) will have no trouble smashing a T-5. You are going to have to step up to the TKO if you want to be hard on it and expect it to live.

My father blew 7 flathead trans in a years time. Engine was a 361 Edsel (fe) As long as you really baby the trans, your O.K.

  13. A strong FE with a 6x2 setup will spit input shafts and spew the guts out of any stock/factory transmission. Even a built Toploader or Tremec will be at their limit if you shift like you're supposed to...hard & fast. Of course 3 pedals are more fun, but if you plan on driving it hard, prepare to spend the bucks on a built C6 that can handle the torque.

You'll be changing transmissions, the question is do you want to do it now or later?

How about buying a used Toploader and rebuilding it yourself to save the dough?

Cooool plan. . .I've only seen one of those intakes, and that was at the Swap Meet in Lincoln, NE about 15 years ago or so. . .it had been polished at one time, and could have been had for $175. Should have bought it just to hang on the wall.

Regarding the other post about a 390 with a cross ram. I had an Edelbrock cross ram in my Pro Street '31 Tudor Sedan, running a pair of 600 cfm Holleys. Sounds like a lot, but was really very docile on the street and got right with the program when you tromped on it. Probably been more sensible to run a pair of 390 cfm carbs, though.

Yes, but even so it will handle all the abuse.

Its Much cheaper than buying a new T-5 for $2000?

A toploader will handle quite a bit of abuse, I think it will be fine behind a 352 in your light car. They can be found reasonable if you look. Online pricing is usually going to be on the high end. Look for something that is not already snapped up by a Ford guy. I picked one up at the Back to the 50's swap meet last year for $240 from a guy who had a little of everything. The outside was a dirty, but the innards were mint. Good luck!

Cost seems to be a factor, so why not go the simplest route?

1.) A '39 For 3 speed floorshift sounds like what you want, but is not strong enough. (!)

2.) If a 3 speed is O.K., why not do a 3-speed toploader bolted behind a stock stick bellhousing? (either pattern is O.K., large or small, toploader 3-speeds come with both patterns!)

Top loader 3-speeds have gears 1-1/2" wide, a synchro 1st gear, optional close ratio, AND a 150 Jeep 3-speed shift tower bolts right on top where the tin plate cover was.
You Do have to remove the forks from inside the case, and push welch (freeze) plugs into the 2 shift-shaft bores in the case...
I bought a 3-speed toploader out of a Ford Econoline van ('66) with a short tailshaft. Others from p***enger cars ('64 to '70?) have longer tailshafts, some pickups have a solid yoke for U Joint, require a 2-piece telescopic driveshaft. Cost between $25- $125.
Jeep shift tower with cane stick: $75, most 4-wheel Jeep repair/wreckers.

This ****** has gears 20% larger than my LaSalles. And it's now a REAL floorshift.
Downside is ****s looking inside, saying "Gennie shifter..."

Top loader is the only way to go. Your 39 trans idea is a wet dream and save the bucks and do it justice the first time. Texas******** has the right idea and good advise also.

I might just have to go with your idea on the 3speed top loader. Thanks mike.

I can vouch for the 3 sppd toplaoder. I ran one in my 65 f100 with a 406 tripower/ bw 4spd. I tried my best to tear it up, but it wouldnt quit.

  29. Ive used a manual truck trans behind a 428 in my 39 ford pickup, theyre bullet proof, but the granny 1st gear is useless lol.
