Suppose this was your car. '29 Ford, owned for 10 years, original boxed frame, 350/350, Rod n Race fibergl*** body, realiable, and fun. And suppose you could shake loose 5 to 6 grand to spend, if you had to. Would you: Stretch to buy a Brookville steel body. Look for an original steel body to fix up. Paint the existing fibergl*** body. Leave it alone and just drive it. Trade it, plus cash, for a steel bodied one. I appreciate your opinions. Thank you.
Theres quirw a few 'gl*** hot rods that are really erally neat. Couple of builds wre here too. If done well i cant see why not. But if its gonna bug you forever then yes, try get a stel body.
I'd leave it and drive for a while, at least until summer then... ...I'd maybe trade for something steel, making sure there is a matching "h***le-free" ***le. I'd look for something '30 or '31 roadster-ish.
Tough decision.....reliable and fun is tough to give up, or replace...... If it were me...I would probably lean toward finding an old body and put that on it....and sell the gl*** one... You still retain the fun and reliable, and it will remain a good friend that just got a face lift... JMHO.. Good luck, and let us know what you do.....
if your not happy with it, sell it and get what you really want on the other hand, i have never regreted not sellin something
New tires and a rollbarectamy. If an original steel body came along at a reasonable price, I would consider that a nice upgrade, and I'm sure someone would buy the fibergl*** one from you, but $6k seems like a lot to spend, I could put together a whole other car for that price, especially a 50's or early 60's car.
Paint it or what ever you want to do to have it finished in your eyes. I have a beautiful 34 3 window fibergl*** outlaw bodied rod and get sick of hearing "it's not a real one" I don't hear it very often, but when I do it just makes me think they are stupid, not me. What are they driving. Mine is done and reliable and payed for and I say screw them people. You can't please everyone and shouldn't want to do what most of your peers think is better. It's yours,,,what do YOU want?
Drite it like that! it looks good the way it is so I would buy another project instead but you seem upset by the gl*** body so you should look for a steel body or you'll regret and you'll keep saying "I should have done it"...
That has to be the main question you have to ask yourself. Is the reason it bothers you that you don't like a gl*** body that much or is it that you think others will dis the car because it has a gl*** body and doesn't meet their expectations. If you "always" wanted a steel body and settled for the gl*** body go ahead and find a decent steel body, either a good old one or a good repro and get the body up to snuff while you are still driving the car and having fun with it and then do the body swap and then find a new home for the gl*** body. Don't blow the money on a steel body if the only reason for it is because some guys might rag on the car because it doesn't have a steel body. Truth be known, most of those kind don't even have a running car to drive, they just like to look for things to badmouth. To me the car looks cool as hell just the way it sits now but it wouldn't hurt to do a few of the things to it that you have always been putting off doing for one reason or another.
Looks cooler than a lot of the steel bodied cars running around. Room for improvement, but still a real neat little car. I'd be happy to cruise that
I'd drive it and have fun with it. That's what I'm doing with my gl*** car. I've spent the winter this year getting it the way I want it with a new interior and dash, I made a new trunk lid and hood out of aluminun because the gl*** ones were ****ty and didn't fit right, and some other little things. Pics are in my album. If you have 5 or 6 grand to spend I'd spend it on this one, it's a nice looking car, make the upgrades you want and keep the rest of the money for the future.
If it was mine I'd change the tyres, loose the wind wings, chop the screen and lower the roll bar. Then drive the **** out of it. The tyre combo doesnt seem to have the hotrod big and little vibe, but it may just be the pic. Either way it looks like a fun little roadster.
pUT MORE MONEY IN IT AND WHEN YOU HAVE TO SELL,NO ONE IS GOING TO GIVE YOU **** FOR IT,nOW DAYS THET THING THIS **** IS FOR FREE.
You asked, don't get mad I think i could totally pull this off for 5 grand.- I'd find an original steel body. Channel it over the frame, lose the roll bar, lose the wind wings, lose the wiper, chop the windsheild, change the shock mounts, Relocate the fronts of the ladder bars inward, chop the grille, lose the spreader bar, change the light mounts, KEEP the fenders but change the tires and lose the hubcaps. THEN I would take the gl*** body and start building a RACE CAR!
Cut the 'gl*** body up to make a faux obscure coachbuilt body. For instance, use the deck area as a sort of streamline roofline (with hatch?); or use your imagination. The possibilities are endless.
Drive it for the summer then spend the money how you choose. You'll be bummed if you can't drive it in nice weather. Tear downs are always mentally easier to do in fall/winter.
i'd get bigger tires for the back and different headlights, then go get a cadillac...or a cool custom cruiser
First thing I'd do is find a local leather guy and have him take that belt off the hood and make 2-3 belts for yourself and some friends. Paint the car and continue to enjoy it.
If you've had the car 10 years you've probably dialed it in pretty good. If it bothered you that it's gl***, I'd look for a steel body. A trade will be hard to find, plus you don't know what kind of car you are getting
If the gl*** body bugs you look for an affordable repairable orig body, pick away at it till your happy then spend a few weekends swapping it over, sell the gl*** body afterwards...that should still leave you with enough extra dough to find another project
