ok, I'm pretty close to getting the 2e35 back together. It is still out of the truck and will be for a while. I am wanting to make sure that I have the most basic wiring down to turn it over and get it to fire up. I've got hoses to byp*** the radiator right now just to fire it up. Plugs in the water pump and outlet neck. fuel line ready to run from pump to can. anyone that could draw up or shoe me a basic wiring schematic? So, here's what I have...
    1956 chevy 235
    1 wire alternator
    122 volt coil
    starter and soelnoid
    ground strap

from alt to battery - 10 ga wire from alt bat post to positive bat post
from coil to distributor - negative coil wire to outside post of distributor
from coil to starter ? - does the positive coil lead go to the starter solenoid (which post if yes)
coil plug wire to dist cap plug center point
i wioll be using a key switch with the motor out, so if you could guide me through I would appreciate it.

    i'd also appreciate positive comments...

NEG. to ground, Pos to starter, Pos to coil and short the Pos to the Start post on the starter with a screwdriver. Vroom!

  4. Positive comment, I'm positive that you will have your new alternator next week some time and you'll like it. :D I hope that 100 amps is enough for ya.

I'm also positive ithat if your truck is blue or green you'll have to tell me which one it is.

Lastly I'm positive you can get it done, and it will be right.

OK on the negative side you're a little young. ;)

  5. Just a suggestion to everyone reading this thread, invest $7.95 in that little orange book Speedway sells on Electrical, should be one in everyones toolbox. :D

ditto on ANY book that covers wiring of hot rods. You'll get more out of that (***uming you follow the directions) than out of a hundred opinions...even from such an august group of sagacious individuals such as are found on the HAMB.

If you're starting the engine just to run it for a minute or two, you do not need the alternator, or any coolant in the engine.

Connect battery negative cable to the engine block or head or whatever is easy to bolt it to.

Connect battery positive cable to big terminal on starter.

Connect coil - terminal to distributor side terminal.

Use a clip lead to connect coil + terminal to battery cable at starter, but don't do this until you're ready to start the engine.

Once you have that clip lead connected, use a screwdriver to momentarily touch the starter S terminal to the big terminal where the battery cable connects. The engine will crank over, and should start.

Remove clip lead to get it to stop running.

If you're trying to get your wiring all figured out for when it's in the truck, I'd suggest you wait until it's in the truck to try it out. But go ahead and draw up what you plan to do, and we can critique your drawing.

On a positive note, running an engine is fun! but on a negative note, if it's out of the truck when you start it, make darn sure it's well supported and won't fall over.
