Absolutely gutwrenching images and video I feel so lucky all my family live up north and so sad for anyone who lost anyone in this. I hope it doesn't upset the balance of things in the rest of the country (volcanoes etc).

Sorry, I started another thread this afternoon, not to compete with yours at all. Just for newer updates since the initial terror of the whole situation, and a look at what's happened since.

My prayers are with you and yours.

Good to see the ANZAC spririt is still alive. As X38 said hang in there.

After all we have had Fires ( a few years ago and more recently floods ) and you came to help us.

  6. The hard part now.
They are starting to recover bodies from buildings deemed to have no life signs.
The toll will be a lot higher than the present 71.
The whole country of 4 million are in mourning in some way.
Kiwis are like one big family and it hurts us all.

  7. Seven years to this day we landed in Christchurch for the beginning of our honeymoon, two weeks driving around the South Island. Really great place to holiday, just like home.

My wife's friend has family there and they are still missing one. Our thoughts are with you guys...

I know its not easy on so many different levels. Never be afraid to talk to someone about it, it does help.
Keep doing the good work, its people like you that your country needs right now.

We hope all are safe and accounted for, those of us here especially in California are all to familiar with these earthquakes and the damage they can do to life and property....our prayers are with you.

  18. Wish we weren't a half a globe away. Prayers sent to all in NZ! If you have been personally effected by the quake, know that we grieve with you and when you can begin
to see past the struggle and pain, we will smile with you. The miles that separate us are united in one spirit as God sees you through this tragedy.

  19. I feel a need to update this post, Urban Search And Rescue teams from the United Kingdom, Taiwan and Japan have all joined our Aussie and USA mates in a joint effort of over 750 trained USAR professionals in Christchurch, To date 98 confirmed dead and still 232 remain missing or unaccounted for. Every nations help is appreciated. Thank You all.

You're not alone with this sentiment, I am sure most of us feel the same. I know I do.

Here is hoping that the Kiwi HAMBers that have not checked in yet are OK.

  22. Toner283, so far most have checked in, but with a lot still missing, all we can do is hope and pray.

Many stories coming out of incredible survival, and some not so good. As a small country, unfortanatly most of us will be mourning someone close. I know two so far who didnt make it, and several who were injured. Once again, thank you all for your support.

A quake that size has 'aftershocks'. It is frightening to work at rescuing trapped folks when another aftershock is looming.

Salute to the brave rescue workers from all over. Wish I could be there to help.

    Thanks for your thoughts guys.
Glad to hear your ok Russ, I see it finally finished off the old Beckenham shops and the garage took a big hit.
Like you our family are all well thank god.
Dug the longdrop in the backyard yesterday for the ( shit just had another big aftershock) necessities, chucked a tent up just in case.
Luckily our power is back on but I dont think there will be running water for quite a while.
The whole city infrastructure, stormwater, sewerage is stuffed.
Oh man they just released the names of the first four victims, one was a toddler another a baby of 5 months. So so fuckn sad.
    Gotta go ,thanks.

  27. At this stage it looks like the death toll will end up somewhere between 2 and 3 hundred, but of course that is speculation. It's not just kiwis caught up in it, the dead include Irish, English, Australians, and students at a foreign language school which included Japanese, Philipinos and Chinese.

  28. The aftershocks will drive many out of ChCh permanently this time.
The Sept earthquake was followed by many thousands of aftershocks.
This time it will be too much for many people.
So sad to see such a beautiful City destroyed like this.

Russ , good to hear you are OK ,and other guys on here plus the NZ Hot Rod Mag Forum.
Its been a hell 5 months here in Canterbury after the September event , with the 4 or 5 thousand after shocks ,everyone has had enough .Now with our City getting a 'BULLS EYE ' ,this will have a huge impact on all of us for ever.
I think the US team arrive here in CHCH tonight, this will bolster the SAR part of the operation, but sadley .We are now most likely in a recovery mode .Its been 30 hours since the last live rescue. Many hundreds still missing.
Like most vibrant City's, CHCH was home to many people from all over the world. We will see this when the final number of dead are pulled from the CTV Building.
Russ , give me a bell on 027 640 1333 , I will be free to help all weeken with anything you need .I have been trying to get some water tanks which I can get filled here by the fire unit ,but all our tank suppliers are closed . I will keep trying.
From all of us ,thanks to all Hambers for your support ,The US Goverment for providing your folk to help us .
CHCH has a very strong link with the US ,with a base here for the Antartica programme

    Steve

  30. I live on the northern outskirts of Christchurch, only about 10 minutes from the central city. We are lucky to live in an area with a strong gravel base and have no damage of any consequence. Our water tank is up on a 25 foot high tower and all our friends reckoned it should have fallen - but it hasn't yet. We only got electricity back on a short time ago - more than 48 hours after the quake - although neighbours only a couple of properties north of us got power back the same day as the quake - they have been powering our freezer for the last couple of days - tomorrow morning's first job is to go and retrieve it. I have a coal range, so hot running water has been no problem and can offer a hot shower to anyone who might need it. I also have an artesian well supplying clean water in quantity.
The news from the central city is certainly disturbing. The rebuild is going to be massive. The damage is so much worse than last time. Even though the loss of life in collapsed buildings is the greatest tragedy, the loss of the our heritage buildings is going to have major consequences long term.
