I am contemplating on purchasing a 471 gmc blower for my y block. Is this blower any good? Its just the blower and snout. I will need everything else. What the price range on rebuilding these? Should i run a 471 or a 671? Where do i get a blower plate so that i can attatch it to the motor? Also i have a pair of ecz-g heads that i should run with a blower if im not mistaken?

  2. 56, I'm sure I'll catch some hell for this from some others, but Y-not a Centrifical supercharger like a Paxton. That will look real traditional on the Y. maybe not the VISUAL inpact of the Roots blower, but could be close with the right fab work. I build engines with both, done right either one will bring a big smile to your face. Just a suggestion :D

Finding and getting the 471 is a good start but the hard part is going to be finding that Y-block blower intake. Cragar made a Y-block intake for the 471 but they are hard to find and painful when you do find them. 471 rotors aren't going to be so easy to find if you need them but the rest of the blower parts shouldn't be so hard to find. Unless you find a complete Cragar kit your looking at doing alot of piecing and parting and machining to make a correct drive system to fit on the motor.

Y-blocks are kinda short/crowded for a supercharger placement unless you build a manifold to get it up/away from the distributor. A 671 would be better suited but are long compared to a 471. I've got a 6v71 blower (which is a little shorter than a 671) that I'm considering for a blown Y-block project.

The Paxton style blowers are more common/popular for the Y-blocks and are easier to fit.

If the 471 already has the rotors then i shouldnt have to get any others right?

56 ford custom;you could use any aluminum manifold and build an adapter for it.That is how many builders do it for the non-mainstream engines. The great thing about a Y-block for a top mounted blower is the distributor being in the rear.If you go to the y-blocks forever forum there are some guys running blown Ys and a lot of good info on that site. As to the intake manifold...
Could you not take a 3 Deuce intake like this:

and machine a matching plate for the blower to sit on?

You'd probably want to mill off the top of the intake, too, as the 6 little holes would be rather restrictive.

The paxton setup can look real period, if you do it right....

  9. 56, there is a MOUNTAIN of info on the subject here on the HAMB. Good chance someone has what you need in the cl***ified too. Lots of good folks start out into S/C with the swap meet GMC blower on the cheap because it only needs this and that. Before your finished, that " this and that " , comes to a small fortune and a world of fustration.

Chief is right on here. And if you do find the 471 manifold be prepared to bend over for it.

I too have a 6v71 that I want to put on top of my yblock. (Chief if you end up working on that idea, keep me posted I would love to see what you do...because it will be a few years before I even start looking at how I'm even going to try and manage to do such a task)

As for modifying a manifold to work, I think you would be better off starting with a dual quad intake rather than a 3 deuce.

That's the way I'd go. That paxton setup is a thing of beauty. Plus the intake charge temps would probably be lower than a roots blower.

But whatever way you go...I'm subscribing cause Y-blocks are cool.

Oh man....this is overwhelming haha. So would i get more power out of a 471 or 671? I would really like a blower. Or what model should i get of paxton? Where do i get all the brackets and belts for the paxton?

You would probably want a 671 cause it will give you more boost, however making it fit could be a challenge. The yblocks came from the factory with an optional McCulloch blower (F code), so one of those would be a direct bolt on, they however are expensive because of the restoration crowd since it was rare for someone to get that option from the factory, but they are out there. Mummert sells alot of the brackets/pulleys etc for the F code

The Paxton looks right because it was an option in '57. Google Paxton.

Id go paxton...but it would be rad to put an old 471 GMC on it (It would be hard to find the blower drive set up and a blower intake for a Y block though)

Put this into Google search: twin turbocharged Ford Y-Block, you can even see one running on video does not look like it would be hard to fab up also more links to check out relating to supercharged Y-blocks.
