Main reason I bought it was it was produced in Oklahoma. Don't know anything else about it. Found a Quick Charge Co. in OK City but said it started in '86. Don't think they built this one.

    Anyone know any history?

It resembles an old Forney, maybe something they built for someone as a house brand? The old Forneys were great welders, learned on the one in my gramps' shop in the sixties, which had the battery charger option, an extra box that plugged into a couple of the welder ports. Should be heavy as hell, good windings in there

I've got one of those big old Forneys that MeanGene427 mentioned and an ancient Craftsman welder that you move the cables from one plug to the other like that to change settings.

Cool looking Garage art that probably will work with a bit of tinkering GV

Don't know anything about it, but in my experience old stuff like that usually will last forever.
If nothing else, it's bitchin' looking.
    Good find!

I was given an old "SureWeld" that required moving the cable from low, med, hi. The amperage was adjusted by turning an art deco looking plate with a "suicide" knob on top. It was HEAVY, and went to 260 amps. I needed the room and ended up scrapping it. I got 110 pounds of copper from the windings and the leads (100 feet of spliced, ratty-looking things). I don't know what sort of clear fluid was in the capacitors, but that part went to an oil recycler.

I kept the front plate and the art deco adjuster.

Sorry not trying to hijack, but does anyone know a good source of parts and info on old welders? Or if they can even be rebuilt? I have an old Forney arc welder with a cast aluminum top and wood case that you change the amperage by moving the cable. I'm just scared to plug it in cause it looks like the insulation has rotted away on most of the wiring

  9. Cool nameplate and logo.

I'd search for welding forums and antique tools forums for info.

  10. I was at the Quick Charge factory in Okie City two weeks ago. Trying to get an old charger fixed - belonged to my dad. He gave it to me in May, 1985. They said it was now obsolete so I hit another brick wall.
But the logo on your welder looks kinda like their logo. Should be someone around there or past employee who might know of a connection.....Might depend on who ya get to talk to...

Hey GV, Remember the thread where Harms Way gave me Frank Mack's old welder? Yours looks like the same kind of construction. Maybe we should meet at a midpoint and have a Weld-Off and let the old guys show off their stuff. Looser could pay the opponents electric bill for the month.:cool::D

I think it is both, had a stinger and ground clamp on the leads. A lot of old welders had a cahrging function.

Look at the plug. It looks like a 50 AMP "crow's foot" to me. A battery charger doesn't need that kind of input amperage.

OK, to answer the question is it a batterycharger? Nope, melts 7018 rod pretty good.

funny i used one of the forney welders that looked just like it for years. the fan gave out and i would have to take off the top and plug in a aux fan to cool it. think i sold it for $50.

A while back a friend asked me to weld up his exhaust at a mutual friends house with his welder. It was older than dirt. 40s or 50s I thought that this old POS was going to make me look like I'd lost it. I was really impressed and so were my buddies. It laid down some beautiful beads. Like hotrodders, just because it's old, doesn't mean it can't do a nice job.:D

Looks a lot like an old Forney I got years ago. Still in the barn for when the little MIG isn't right - Plows and farm equipment ...

PS: older Welder/Chargers used Selenium rectifiers to convert to DC. - Very bad stuff for humans and other organic life forms...

    Have Fun
