That is a beautiful car. You should count your lucky stars the idiot did not have the cash.

  2. I love these posts. No matter which side, the poster is always right.
    Sooooo....
Do you guys pay full sticker for a new car??
I know you don't, 'cause I was on the other side of the desk.
Do you assume just because someone says 'firm' that it really IS firm??
No, you don't. The price in this negotiation was firm ONLY WHEN the seller said NO. Not before.

Hells bells. There are folk on here that brag about how low they went on buying car, then turn around and say that the buyer for THEIR car is an asshole for doing the same thing??

    WOW.

Selling is selling, buying is buying. Negotiating is part of the process. As I said, NONE of you would walk into a new (or used) car dealer and fail to negotiate ANYTHING on the lot, regardless of what the sticker said.

This guy did the same thing, yet you pillory him for doing exactly what YOU would do in the same circumstance.

2 grand off the 35 large asking price is only around 5 percent.

lets put up 200 more posts about a story on a guy selling a car that got an offer and didn't take it cuz it wasn't enough for him. Please, we need more of these thought provoking threads on the HAMB. Maybe if everyone stays on this thread long enough you will all start your menstrual cycle at the same time.

Not quite the same thing. None said he didn't have the price of admission-they just had different ideas about what that price should be. cars aren't movies.

    Quoted for truth.

A little negotiation never hurt anybody. I don't understand why guys get so bent out of shape about people trying to haggle on their "firm" prices. The potential buyer is just trying to see how firm the price really is. I don't think there's anything wrong with that.

Do you need that exact amount to pay your mortgage or something? If so, just decline the offer and move on. People around here talk like the firmness of their prices is their pride.

    Get over it.

Personally, for me, if I got my asking price, I wouldnt sweat 10 hours of my life to move on to the deal I wanted.

When it was for sale the first time was it "firm" at $39K? Then $7K was invested and it became "firm" at $35K. Put another $7K in it and I'll buy it a $32K.

Sorry it didn't sell, but good for you on standing firm...
I know this probably wouldn't really work but wouldn't it be nice to have taken the $33K, then delivering the car MINUS the wheels, radiator, lights, etc !!!!

A good counter offer might have been the $33,000.00 and you keep the fenders and spare parts.
I know it wouldn't have gotten you the cash for the other car you wanted, but you could move the fenders pretty quickly. But maybe not fast enough to get the other car that you wanted and then you would be stuck without the option of getting your dream car.

I don't know if this reply was directed at me or not but I'll answer it anyway. It only makes you an A hole if you agree on a firm price first and then count out short money. Haggling is a way of life for me as well. The OP's complaint was that the prospective buyer knew in advance the deal was $XX,XXX *FIRM* before he left his house, agrees to buy and then counts out short money!:D

I've worked in sales and sales-related industry for the first half of my adult life and the second half as an attorney who negotiates transaction deals and conflict settlements.

Buyers will buy when the price is justified in their minds, either from their own research or from the Seller "selling them" on the reasons why the price is justified. Merely saying "Firm" because the price is justified in the Seller's mind doesn't do anything to persuade/convince the Buyer. Just saying "Firm" because you don't like to sell, argue, dicker, haggle, or otherwise negotiate may make you somehow feel good but it's not going to sell alot of inventory or make alot of deals.

I hear the words Firm or Non-negotiable all the time. It's may be thought to be true at the time that it is said, but it's never true in long run.

I bet I know who this is. He tried to do the same thing to a friend. He had it sold over the phone (the guy said he knew the car), arranged to meet at an event about 30 miles away. My friend changed his plans and went to an event he had not planned on going to because that is where he wanted to pick up the car. He didn't sell his car to him either. It must work sometimes for him to keep doing it.

  25. I don't know about anyone else, but I would never buy a car at the asking price site unseen. And out of respect of the seller I would never negotiate over the phone.

A $30,000 plus purchase should be a person to person, face to face transaction.

That is just my personal feelings. The prospective buyer did spend ten hours driving to see the car and going back home. $33,000 may have been all the money he could come up with. I think we all have a finite amount of cash we can get.

Anyway, it is a beautiful car. Anyone that owns it would be proud.

A couple of years ago, I was looking at a '57 Buick. The guy wanted 6K for it, and I offered him 5K cash. He reacted indignantly, and I left. A month later, he called me and told me he'd take the 5K. I told him to go fuck himself. As noted - money talks and bullshit walks.

Wow Funny, Long, But Dude wtf meet the guy at 2:00 am that is the BS. Hope you had an equalizer too. I sell all day, Money talks, BS walks ALWAYS LESS than You or Me are asking. Firm means not as much less. Firm means nothing though if sight unseen.

    People amaze me.

I "sold" a car a while back. After twenty plus conversations on the phone and e-mails for hours we came to a price. (Lower than I wanted, but at least I would be done with it) The guy shows up a few days later after a 1300 mile trip with $5k short.

He ends up getting pissed at me that he drove all that way and I wasn't willing to budge.

    Unbelievable.

    IMPORTANT FYI:
A check is just an IOU. Worth crap unless you know & trust the guy ( and know where he lives), just ask your bank.
A bank or certified check is only good if you can CALL THE BANK to verify ( totally worthless after 3PM and on Sat or Sunday). That is another reason Cash Talks!
