I picked up a 1966 Lincoln in perfect condition except for the engine the rear main seal is shot. Can I replace it by just removing the trans. I was told you by a friend that he had to remove the whole engine from the car to replace the seal.
sorry to be the bearer of bad news but its a 2 pc seal which means to replace it the crank has to come out. the mel motors were a y-block design so you also have a seal on each side of the rear bearing cap. you could always try just pulling the rear cap and replacing the lower half and the side seals but noone is that lucky.
Pull the engine and re-real it completly, those are sweet Torque-monsters who deserve to be free of leaks.Remember to check out the cam chain and gears, you dont want to run the stock plastic covered upper gear since the nylon gets brittle with age and falls of and may clog the oil pickup and starve your oilpump. And if you have any leaks from the exhust manifolds,be sure to mill the surfaces flat, both on the heads and the manifolds, otherwise your new gaskets will start to leak again very soon. Also change the steeringfluid filter located in the reservoar, those pumps are expensive.Good luck with your MEL!
Not to be a total a-hole but these are the kind of questions that when asked it raises a red flag for me. You need physical ***istance with this or farm it out because if you f-it up you can do irrepairable damage. Many of us love the car hobby, but some need to accept limitations and others need not to have tools and a large checkbook.
No offense I know my limitation that's why I havent taken apart my Nailhead. Thanks for the info guys
