Wife's are easier to find than a good big garage! One of mine got the garage and one didn't! Live and learn. LOL

Our retirement home is just under 1000 sq.ft. turn of the century general store we are converting into a house, 1 bedroom, 1 bath, kitchen, eating area, TV room, computer room, walk in closet and a shower/sauna area on 3/4 acre with 24x32 garage and building a 40x60 pole barn this year. Easy to keep clean and all our priorities that we always wanted without a killer mortgage. We could not have raised 5 kids here, but it is wonderful now!

Hey...When is the garage warming party. Kansas isn't that far. Do you have room for a few Hamb'ers?

I was lucky enough to get a house that needed remodeling to fit the family in exchange for a shop about 40 square feet smaller than the house. Thank God for rural living, 35k. I can't find just the house for twice that now. Congrats, it is nice to work on cars indoors. It was a new experience for me. Here's too many happy and productive years for you and yours.

  8. I love that style of your house. Kinda Craftsman/Cape Cottage style.
You're going to go places with that new house and the work you'll be doing with the garage.
You'll also find a lot of new neighbors peeking in on those projects of yours. Fun!!

That is an epic answer, and the fact that it was second only makes it better. :D Good luck with the house.

When I met my wife I had a transmission in the tub, 2 Monza doors in the living room, and a Chopper in the kitchen. I said this is the way it is unless I get a garage, Had garages every since.

LOL! That worked for me too! First time my future wife came to my place, you could barely get down the hall, one wall was lined with metal shelfing units with cams, pistons, intakes, carbs ect spilling off the shelfs. She says"you have an awful lot of car parts". I laughed and opened the door to the extra bedroom, it was full of more parts, and filing cabinets full of old hot rod magazines. Then I started going around the apartment opening closets. Converters, gear sets manual valve bodies ect. When we went house shopping a big garage was on her list of priorities. Now I have one car built in ba*****t garage, a two car detached shop, a detached storage shed and a canvas "garage" for good measure. Looking to add two bays to the front of the detached next year.

Falcongeorge, Sounds like my place. The realtor could not get it through his head what we were looking for. He kept showing us big homes with no yard or garage. My wife finally sits down with him and says ," Look, I know you probably cater to women who want the big pretty dream house and convince their husbands to buy it for them. That aint going to happen here, you show us one more house that doesnt have a garage or a place to put one up and we are going to someone else." Man, she read him the riot act, we ended up buying a whole lot cheaper house just so he didnt get as big of a commission. God, I love that woman!

When we first were married, we always joked about a 2 room house with a 10 car garage. Now the 2 room house seems okay, but the garage may not be enough! LOL

Thats basically what I told my agent. I want a big garage, but i do need a place to eat sleep and shower. The house though actually turned out to be a pretty nice little place. even has a nice man cave in the ba*****t. I'm going crazy waiting and I dont even close till april 15th.

Start packing and labelling the boxes for the rooms of the new place.
For the homeowner's insurance, they always want an itemized list of all the stuff. Time to get a digital camera and do***ent all your stuff so there won't be issues.

Check the local CL for shelves and lighting.
    http://swks.craigslist.org/for/2190441979.html
Pick out colors for the walls, it's a lot easier to paint when it's empty.
If you are going to have tunes, power and/or air lines out in the garage, it's easier to do that before the place is full too.
Drive by at all hours to get a better feel for the neighborhood.
Check into security and insurance now. Also check out the house insurance that is usually included with the sale. Get a good one, lots are fly-by-night.
Get the forwarded mail kit and start sending out those notices when it gets closer.
Do you have lawn and garden stuff?
If you have an older fridge, it may be time to move that one out to the garage and buy a new one.
Make sure you have all rolling objects running if possible.
Remind all your buddies that moving day is mid April.

PS Cars are around 7X15 on average. People are around 2X6 laying down. Of course you need more car space than people space!!!

  25. You can eat and sleep in the garage if you have to, but you can't very well work on your car in the house, so you're right to make the garage the top priority.

That drive is way long enough to make it a 10 car shed before the front goes on!!!!!

I keep telling people who are planning shops/garages that whatever you THINK you need, DOUBLE it. It always looks bigger on paper than it is in real life. 2X what RodStRace said, fix it up before you fill it, its harder the other way around.
