Hey all, Just bought a 54 Belair post last weekend and I'm still going through the process of trying to get it fired up to see if it runs. Not looking too good though. I do have a line on a (what the guy says) a 55-57 generation 235 motor. He says its out of a 3600 truck. The lising also includes the transmission from the truck, he just mentioned it in the ***le, not the body. Actually, here's his post: I have a 55-57 generation inline 235 6 cylinder chevy engine with floor shift manual trans i took out of a chevy 3600 this summer. the engine ran good when i removed it this fall. No idea as to how many miles it has on as it wasnt the original motor in the truck. Wondering if this will bolt right up to the manual transmission thats in my car now. And also, just to eliminate questions later, would any 235 bolt up to my transmission? Now, I know it would be great to just yank mine out and go have it rebuilt, but I'm just looking for a cheap solution right now so I can get this beast on the road!!
The bellhousing is different, 54 and older car trans MUST have 54 and older car bell. some earlier trucks are different (use the 55-up car pattern). you will also need to change motor and trans mounts to use the 55-57 engine in a 52-54 car. 58-62 are easier to adapt. starter and flywheel must be a match set from 54 older or 55 newer. Different teeth count. IF you can find a truck 3 speed, you can retain the torque tube and use the newer bell. basically go to inliners.org and read up.
You might have to build motor mounts, everything at the rear of your 54 motor will bolt up to the later engine.
Thanks guys. I appreciate the info. I'll use the 55 engine and fab up some new motor mounts. Will use my 54 ******.
Another.. Reading through the threads here I came across someone mentioning that a 6v starter had to be mated to a 6v flywheel. The 55' 235 I just purchased came with a manual ****** mounted to it. In the interest of saving money on a converting my 6v starter on my 54' to 12v, will the 12v starter and 12v flywheel that I pulled off my 55' ****** fit in the bellhousing of my 54 ******?
