How Much Sound Deadener Do I Need

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by 345 DeSoto, Feb 28, 2011.

  1. Anybody got a ball Park figure on how many square feet of sound deadener mat it would take to do a 32 Roadster? I'm thinking floor, up to under the dash, kick panel area, doors, and around the back of the seat. Also the trunk...floor and sides. Thinking of using Fatmat. Thanks, guys...

  2. About 25 sq.ft.

I used a bulk pack of 58 square feet of Hushmat to do the cab of a 62 Ford unibody. It fully covered the roof, back wall, floor, firewall and kick panels.

None...it's supposed to be a freaking Hot Rod. I understand Volvo wagons have a ton of the stuff.

Sorry if this hijacks the post, but on doors do you typically cover the inner door skin, or the inside of the outer skin?

just for grins, I know it's not a roadster, but just letting you know. I used 100 square feet of Rattle Trap (the thicker version of Fat Mat) on the floor of my 62 Bonneville, I put 2 complete layers on the floor, 1 layer up the back seat brace and over the package tray, and an extra layer in each foot well area.

WOW! I thought the other guys were dicking around. Your truck is tiny, how could you fit that much in there. It must be like packing a rat with the Gobi desert. I mean, really, do you layer it or just.... something...

The stuff was cheap. (ebay) my last rpu sounded like a tin can and resonated at 2800 rpm, i wore earplugs on long trips. this one sounds solid, feels solid and I don't get the heat from the motor/trans in the cab. I installed it on any panel i could. In the past i used dynamat. This stuff is easier to apply & is 25% of the cost. I'm happy with it & is worth the $ & work IMHO.

I talked to two different companies at a trade show recently that make that butyl backed foil insulation like Dynamat.
They both said you only need about 70% area coverage, so completely covering is not necessary.
That said, I will probably cover all of the interior area just like Troyz did.
Is that the butyl backed material, Troyz, and what is the brand name on it?

Even in an open car, the mat helps you here the motor better, by taking out the road noise. So it makes the whole car sound much better...

  16. Sorry 'bout that, I bought two boxes of HushMat, each box is 39 sq. ft,
I just counted what I have left, looks like about 66 sq. ft. is what it took to do the interior of my coupe. I covered everything solid in the cab and most of the doors.

Newspapers are more traditional.:D 60 years from now a new owner will know exactly when it was done. These came from my roadster doors. It works my buddy thought that the doors were fiberglass when he shut them.:D

i can't hear good, so i took the mufflers out - don't need insulation now - passengers that don't like it can stay home - i tell the cops that i'm deaf & it didn't sound that loud to me

Loud cars just have no place on the street. It annoys the regular, boring folks. Most, I said most, street engines don't sound good enough to be loud, anymore than some 16 year old snot nosed kid's car running around with the trash can exhaust tip on his worn out Honda making the "bumble Bee in a trash can" sound. It's annoying; period.
Same thing for the dweebs and their Harley's, or ricer sport bikes with cans on them.
It is just plain bad for our hobby, lifestyle, whatever you want to call it...

  20. I'm in the same boat as TROYZ...resonance. I've got Porters on the exhaust, so it sounds really nice, but the resonance is what's getting to me. Whizzing down the road in an open Roadster is fine...love the sound of the pipes and blower whine...

I used fat mat in two trucks. I'm happy with it, but this morning on the way to the exaust shop it didn't keep the noise from open headers out, I don't know why. Lol:cool:
