The grill and various trim pieces on my Ponti look to be made of pot metal. Will the pitting pose any issues with plating? I've read that if it's too bad of shape the part with "fall apart" in the process. Here's a snap shot of the hood trim and grill. Thanks JT Hood Trim Grille (close) Grill: Good from far but far from good.
Those pieces look awesome compared to the pot metal Oldsmobile pieces I had Steve Tracy from Advanced Plating do for me. I had chucks missing from pieces that they repaired and plated to perfection, and I mean perfection. Advanced Plating 1425 Cowan Court Nashville, TN 37207-5628 (615) 227-6900
The hood ornament is pot metal, and shows pretty typical pitting; I've fixed much worse. It won't fall apart. Those old Pontiac hood ornaments are stout, heavy chunks of metal. The hood trim it sits on is steel, and so is the grill ***embly. They look like good candidates for rechroming. The biggest issue with thin steel parts is rust coming from behind. Yours look pretty nice, so if there are any issues with that, it will be in isolated areas prone to holding water/debris and cheap to fix. I have had pot metal parts fall apart as I worked on them, but I just put them back together, lol. Usually, the falling apart is caused by straightening bent up and dented pot metal, or existing cracks being agitating by the processing. Pot metal work hardens very fast, as in bending it two times usually results in cracks.
To be honest I don't see anything there that isn't a good candidate to get re chromed . If you going to get it done , let the company you choice do ALL the cleaning work and **** . That way you don't make a mistake that will cost you more in the end . Let the pros do it . Damn nice grill ! Advanced Plating is a good one and the place here in Pa. I forgot the name off hand but very reputable . Retro Jim
Josh, you do carbs? in particular strombergs, i have a trio that i am ready to dip and am looking for a place to get it done. Also should i build caps to keep the chrome outa the insides of them?
