So weirdly enough I did find another thread on this but it didn't give me the info I'm looking for.

I found an old clock from a Russian mig that winds up and is the perfect size for my dash in the 53 Merc.

The only problem I'm having is that I don't read a lick of Russian and it has two knobs on the front. I don't have the clock in my possession just yet (it's coming from $bay) Does anyone know how these wound? It looks like there is a stop watch function on it too which would be pretty great if I could figure out how to run it.

I thought they used metrics over there... Are you sure this will keep STANDARD time???

sorry I can't be of any "actual" help. Cool clock though. Just a thought, but the google translator seems to work decent if you need to decode something...

That's a good point! I wonder if anyone in the states can convert it to read American time. (HA!)
I will look up the translations though and try to find out what that knob says. I'm betting nyck means wind...

Now to get a russian keyboard so I can type it into the translator properly.

  4. Come on......It keeps time in Russian....
Go online to use the Russian/English converion to translate the words.
Start a penpal with a MIG fighter pilot to learn how to use it.......

I believe if you google search you should be able to find an "on screen" keyboard to allow you to type any special characters... I'm on my mobile device or I would find one for you...

Hmm. No luck. Evidently all the translator sites have no idea what nyck (which it turns out is actually phsk) means. Oh well. I'll figure it out when it gets here and keep everyone informed.

just looking at it, the right nob has ridges so that would be the winder. the other one is red and looks like it has a divet so you push to start stop the stop watch, bet if you hold it it returns to zero. OR you hold it to to time and then let up to return to zero.

Yah, i like mystery and would get it and play with it for a while till i fingered it out. thats the fun.

  12. The letters on the knob translate to "P-U-S-K" which means "run-up", or, I think it's safe to assume, "wind". On the smaller dial, SEK is an abbreviation for Seconds.

    Really cool clock.

Are you absolutely certain that it is an electric clock and not mechanical?
I have a clock from an Antonov AN-2 here on my desk that looks exactly the same.
    WIND UP....mechanical.

My brother-in-law speaks very fluent Russian, and he's a US Navy pilot, I'll run this by him.

According to my Russian dictionary пуск means "starting" if that helps at all.

LOL Actually, he flies the P3 Orion, (prop plane). They use it for eavesdropping. Since the poor bastard was fluent in Russian, they shipped him out to Tiblisi Georgia (the ex-USSR republic) for a year stint...haha

At any rate, that is a cool damn clock, it will look great in a dash!

The only problem with an old Soviet clock is that it'll only tell you what time it is in Vladivostok or Leningrad or something.

    ;)

Thanks for all the great responses fellas. I'm glad so many of you decided to pipe up!

And yeah it is mechanical, The way I understand it some of them had internal electric heaters to keep them from freezing up at altitude but the mechanism was all wind up.

You may want to find a old clock repair shop. It may need a good cleaning . But if it was in a plane it may have a sealed case and just need to opened up for a lube job on the pivot points . Cool buy

  25. i knew someone that spoke Russian.. and went over there for a while... the first phrase in Russian you learn translates to "this doesn't work" if you go over there...

  26. I have a Russian employee who is fluent in several languages. I asked him to look at this. NYCK and CEK didn't ring any bells with him. He couldn't think of any abbreviations or acronyms that might fit either. Very cool chronometer though.

  27. You just better hope that Sen. McCarthy doesn't find out about this :)
