Thanks, I knew it was something someone would be able to identify. where was my head? It has an electric clutch to engage the fan and pulley. It looks fordish to me but I can't figure what it came from.

Appears to look like a fan. With attached mounting bracket.

Looks like an 8BA flathead fan to me. I'd bet $5 on it!

I've never seen one with the electric clutch looking thing, but I'm not a FH expert either.

Thats interesting. Looks like it could be an aftermarket setup.

I doubt if its aftermarket. It looks as old as the hills and weighs half a ton. They don't make stuff like this anymore. Unless it was an antique aftermarket.

  10. Maybe old diesel stuff ?

im going to guess with some of you , i suggest possibly a older large truck flathead maybe , 272/292 raised type mount to get more in heart of air flow , maybe even coe , older electric lock up hub as newer have air control and thermo switchs , just thoughts though

My best guess is the fan was engaged by a temperature switch to power the clutch making for better cooling.

Maybe an electrically switch controlled electromagnetic clutched fan drive? Disengage at higway speeds then engage when creeping thru city traffic? My guess.

Glad it was ID'd. It would make more sense to me to find an armature and windings in there so the fan could overrun in a low RPM/high load condition, rather than a clutch to disengague and free wheel. Those engines run 'a little warm'. Hers an idea... amaze your friends and make a shop fan outa'it.
