trying to decide what shifter to buy for the 39 .looking at the so called street rod shifters . I have seen posts on the lokar and gennie shifters pro and con. what about the ones made by B@M ? TCI also makes one.have just about ruled out the lokar unit because of the ****un in the knob. the b@m shifter is operated by pushing down on knob then back and forth into the gears. how does the gennie operate ? which is the better shifter?
I've heard Gennie is out of business. The last Gennie I had worked fine with no ****ons to push. Lokar makes decent products. Why can't you live with the ****on?
I ran the B&M and loved it in my 46, I ran the long handle and it fit the truck great. If you plan on racing it has no reverse lockout though...just FYI. I also ran a Hurst boot and changed out the knob to a more period knob, it looked pretty cool. I'll see if i have a pic of it installed. Scot
I don't care for the look fo the ****on myself. B&M and Hurst belong to the same corporation now or so I have heard. I haven't had a chance to look at the B&M but I would think it would be a good shifter. TCI would be my next choice. I haven't had as much luck with their parts as other people but in the past they have produced a good product.
I can't find a pic of my pickup right now, but you can pretty much picture a rounded 4 speed appearing auto shifter with an old school round black knob on it with the big square boot. I ditched the billet-y knob and got a basic black plastic one and it looks a ton better. Here is the B&M shifter:
It looks like it may be time for someone to start making and selling better looking knobs for the Lokar shifters. I'd think that it wouldn't be that hard to come up with a nob where the whole knob was used to push down the detent to go to reverse or park but still looked and felt like a normal old shift knob the rest of the time. Or just spend the 30.00 + shipping and use your own knob http://www.speedwaymotors.com/Lokar-Shifter-Knob-Adapter,5862.html
Great-looking knob on that '49 ! Very original & cool - I like it . The headliner ... well that's ... fuzzy .
There are already at least a DOZEN threads on the subject. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/search.php?searchid=12951878
So it looks like my choices are one shifter that reliability is in question, another the companies reliability is in question. ordered the B@M ,only one I heard nothing negative about .let ya know how it works out. thanks for everyones input.
G***ersgarage even has the Duece of Spades horn . Nice shifter but the 1970's fuzzy white roof , I am not to sure about that one at all ! Please don't tell me you have Keystones for your mags . Retro Jim
the adapter costs another 30+ just to change knob.that still does'nt fix the involintary gear changes there reported to make.
I must of fitted around 40-50 Lokars over the years and i've never known them do that, sounds like incorrectly setup to me.
I use a Lokar a shifter and never had a shifting problem ! Like Langy has said must not be set up correct. Go with the adapter for the 30 bucks and run any knob you like ! Hell I can blow 30 bucks at Burger King. There are some Hamber's makin some sweet knob's.
A friend just put the B&M in his car and I really like the looks, but no reverse lockout spooks me. He already hit reverse while driving down the road. Fortunately it killed the engine and so far can't find any damage. I'd feel better with a good positive neutral and reverse lockout.
I have the Locker and its not bad once you get used to it.I have no emer brake and like it because it locks in park. The FREE boot they couldn,t charge for it not much good. I don,t think it looks out of place maybe paint the chrome.
Tell'm to read and adjust as the manule said too,it dose have spring loaded lock out in it's detent,I hate it when no one reads the books they send along with the stifters, what's up with that. never had any probs with my B&M
received B@M shifter . quality looking , easy to install ,easy to operate. dont see how it could go into reverse from drive.
