The MEL was designed by Ford to replace the Lincoln Y-Block. The MEL was in production from 1958 through 1967. It ranged in size from 383 ci to 462 ci. The 430 being the most common and performance orientated, nicknamed the Bulldozer for its nearly 500 ft-lbs. of torque. The Lincoln Y-Block was produced from 1952 through 1957 and ranged in size from 317 ci to 368 ci. By the late 50's, Ford need more torque for its ever larger Lincoln and Mercury cars, and thus designed the MEL series to take over were the Lincoln Y-Block left off.
To my knowledge there pretty hard to find. I think their the best lookin' 6x2 manifold for the MEL. Now I'm all giddy to polish mine!
Good question, 1953-57 Lincoln and Mecury used their own overgrown Y-Block. 317, 341, 368...... Mercury. Edsel. Lincoln. (MEL) is 1958-67?? maybe. Kinda based off of FE Ford, very similiar design. BUT much larger and loads more power. Probably one of the best Looking Engines ever. Here is my 368 Lincoln Y-block. Its currently not very clean, and awaiting a killer overhaul.
I heard the same thing. Wasn't sure if it was true or not. Never saw another one before. These are some vintage pieces of Americana
I live near Edlebrock I will go in and ask about more details and when i do i will let you know. I always see wanted adds for them! Ive had my intake for over 5 years and have been offered big bucks for her in the past.... Ive also got a set of Mondello Heads for my 430 hope to be a real fast engine!!!
The 6x2's weren't just for drag boats although i've found several there. Weiand made 6x2 and 8x2 log intakes, edelbrock made 6x2 and 3x2 intakes and the factory made 3x2 intakes. No one made dual quad intakes. I did have a Latham blower setup for an MEL a few years ago and there are blower intakes out there too. I've had several 6x2's, one Weiand 8x2 and one crower 8x2, along with a crower 6x2, a Hilborn, an Algon injection, Joe Hunt magneto, Vertex, Ducoil distributors, Moon made finned valve covers (and repopped them again recently). Stuff is out there and they are torque monsters right from the factory.
Dean, I don't have any complete engines right now other than the two in the Lincolns I have for sale. The only "speed part" I have right now is the factory tripower.
Jake....I think that the owner is a HAMB member. If you need contact info look up one of the Chupracabras. Local DFW club. He had the rail at the recent Pistons & Paint show. Man you should hear this thing run on nitro!

Not the prettiest engine right now but someday...Its a 462 with the intake, carbs and moon valve covers (recently recast by Moon from original castings!) just mocked up on the engine. If you want the tri power on a 462 you need earlier 430 heads so the intake ports match. Brian Estrada (bestrada11) sold me a mild Isky cam in the past and I know Slover's in CA has made reproduction style Super Marauder valve covers and they are working on a valley pan and other goodies. Rumor has it he wanted or is going to make fuel injection???!!!
I have a '64 430 MEL I'm putting in my truck. I went down today to get the block cleaned honed and bored out. I'll get some pics posted when I get it back.
Here's my MEL. It's a 430 in a 1964 Biesemeyer Flatbottom. The valvetrain is unusual(not stock). I'll have to post some pictures of it. -Rob
Time to reboot an old thread, Found this picture of a 430 powered Willy's running at the Keystone Bison Dragway in Manitoba. Since MEL powered dragsters are few and far between I figured it was appropriate. Does any one have any engine pics from this car? Also, The FED in the far lane is running a 430. This car was owned by the Foolish Four, does any one else have any more info???
I realize this is a old thread but figured I would post pic of mine. This is a 410 Mel has custom ground Isky cam. 3x2 intake system. Dual point diss and dual coils also chrome M valve covers Has a T10 4 speed tied behind it. It's in my T bucket. This thing is crazy to drive. I am thinking of pulling it out and putting smaller engine in it. The 410 might be for sale. Now if I can figure out how to post pics.
