You guys know I talk about my grandpa a lot. Between the HAMB and him, it's the only places I can go to talk hotrods and to get ideas from those that are ACTUALLY building something. Anyway, there was a thread a while back about let's see what's on your wall. Well, here's 50+ years of flathead and hot rodding stuff. You probably can't tell what half of it is from the pics.......but hey! This pic is mostly flathead stuff. You name it, it's there!!! I mean it, it's probably there. This her is one of "them" guys that won't sell anything.....first, he uses it! And second, he'll horse trade about anything. Shoot, he even says he bought grandma at the flea-market
there's a rocket under all those tires.....nope can't see it........I asked him about it and he said "I ain't seen it in 40 years"....
Wow, cool stuff, but how on earth does he find anything?? That reminds me of the attic where I got my Rochester 2bbl and Guide Headlights.
Need a chain hoist.....in this garage there are about 10 stick welders of the 30-40 he has........I know, crazy but if you hear his story about how he grew up poor during the depression and how he couldn't even fix his dad's plow......you'd understand!
need a head gasket? as you can see from most pics...everything is wired up to the ceiling and on the walls. the walls are litterally 3-5ft. thick with stuff.....as you dig back it's like going back in time....
here's his car, nestled amoung all this stuff grandma calls junk... notice the rationing stickers in the left of the winshield.....i think they were for tires and gasoline during the war notice the original head lights.....those aren't sealed beams! he got this car about 20 years ago with 12k miles on it.....he hasn't done anthing to it....except it now has 18k.......he hasn't taken on the street in probably 8 years, he doesn't even have insurance on it....yep, i know crazy.....remember we're dealing with a fella that is set in his ways.... it get's started and pulled about almost every day....that way he can move in his garage.......
Thats cool and everything, but how the heck could you work like that? I get mad when i trip over a pile of s**** metal. Nick
He does all of his work outside and keeps all of his tools in little rubber-maid totes and ice cream buckets.....i know, it's crazy!
here's his model a up close, this was as far back as i could get.... notice the "po boy air conditioning" in the inside of the car......look at the roof......yep, it's an electric fan that he can run either direction.... I've got one more but i need to block out the plate # first....he didn't want it on there......
here's a good shot of his car.....you can't sit in the p***enger seat...new bearings, distributors, points, coils.....same in the trunk, it is litterally FULL of parts that are all cleaned and ready to go.....never know when you're on the road and need 20 ready to run distributors..... Fellas, thanks for letting me share with you. I tell him about the HAMB all the time. He doesn't have much respect for people unless they are working, specifically on cars.....I tell him that you guys are making it happen on here! He says there are two types, "There's doers and there's talkers, which are you?" Grandpa is not a private person he is VERY likeable. So, if you're ever this way, give us a yell....he'll talk you to death....you CAN'T get away! he'll chase you up the road still talking.... to be honest, he wanted to play a prank you guys and have me show you that head on shot of his car. he wanted me to say, "look what I found in an old guys barn. he only wants 2500 for it. do you think i should buy it" I told him i don't know everyone well enough yet to pull something that rotten off.... see the ice-cream buckets full of tools! pull out car and what do you know, you have access to all your tools....well some of them...
**** man........he wins the "stuff on the wall" award ! Ya gotta love those old guys that won't throw anything away.
Ask him what he'd like to horsetrade for that Nailhead. Seriously. I'm in Atlanta, and my family is in Ohio--no problem for getting it! And since he only likes to horsetrade, let's see what we could put together if you're interested in being a go-between. -Brad
Man, if I didn't know better I'd think you were talking about my gramps!!Crochitty ol' coot! But I miss him alot.Listen and learn!Give him my best wishes and respect!! AL
Brad, I'm about to horse trade him out of it myself. I have some tires and rims he wants. If we dont' do through with it, what do you have to trade....he likes old Ford stuff.... I'm gonna get you hot on this....it hase the standard ****** bell housing, flywheel, clutch and pressure plate. He got this out of a low mileage, wrecked school bus. He hasn't started it since around the late 50's, very early 60's. I don't even know what size it is.... I'm trying to trade him out of the rocket but he says he doesn't want to move all that stuff. Not that I expect it, but just some FYI, he won't give me anything. All the stuff I have, I have bought. He doesn't treat me like a grandson when it comes to this type of stuff, more like a buddy. He says he used to give his buddies all this stuff for free. Well, when the sold the car, his stuff went with it and they don't even come and see him or play old cars now. So, I guess he thinks I'll do the same....
Man, I thought MY garage was a mess! That is really cool. You're lucky he's still around to share all his stories with you. Ya gotta love a guy like that.
Man, that's all you have to say. All the old timers I've met who lived through the depression are Different when it comes to keeping things. Doesn't matter what it is, if there's even a chance they might someday be able to use it, it stays. I just visited my grandpa in the hospital the other day. He said he had an old industrial engine sitting in a machine shed that I didn't know about. Then he says "When did the last war start? 1941? I think that's right. It hasn't run since 1943, but I squirted some oil in there and it still turns over. Think anybody'd want it?" Then we started arguing about how mussels stand up.
You're lucky he's still around to share all his stories with you. Ya gotta love a guy like that.[/QUOTE] Yeah--start downloading his head onto the HAMB! Someone like that is a living treasure. Everything we need to know flows from people like that. How about a little history--what cars, when, racing action??? By the way, that pic you sent was indeedy a KRW distributor fixture. The 3 to 2 bolt adapter is an H&C good one, made to use on a car of course. The KRW equiv would have been iron. Now, clear some stuff and see whats inside--mine had a set of D batteries dated 1942 and not leaking still in the clips! See if there's a KRW offset screwdriver and a tension scale and...in there! Can't email yet, computer and I are recovering from a little problem...
And that wall, or alleged wall...that looks like my garage...and my ba*****t...and my desk...and my refrigerator...look.
I'll try to open the box sometime and shoot a pic of it. He said, "Yeah, I think it did have batteries but I think I took them out years ago." Well, it's funny you say that. I downloaded some software that allows you to record your phone conversations to the hard drive. I haven't played with it for a while because I couldn't get all of the bugs worked out. But, wouldn't that be neat! I have started a Word file and I just start typing when he talks about flathead stuff and stories.........
