That really looks good Fitzee! I love the shape of the side window it really changes the look of the car , what do you have planned for a backlight?
HUH!! Had to look that one up!!! Sorry no LCD on this car!!LOL As for a back glass I had a front glass from that 1980 chevy truck. Plan is to cut it down to a size and shape I like and build a frame around it. I never got that far yet so the idea might change. Did not want to think too much about it cause it is another issue that I need to figure out. I`ll figure out something
Went back at it today. Want to get the roof all tacked together. Before i put the roof skin on i had to join the middle frame on the roof to the windshield post then cap the out side. Still have to join the inner frame to the roof but will do that when I weld everything inside.
Next I fit and welded the front section on the roof. I had to watch it here cause it didn`t take much for the roof to drop on me. Had to cut the tacks and try again. After that I reinstalled both cross member in the roof.I bent these a bit cause i found they ere a little flat for my liking. After then came the skin. Took my time here checking the roll of the roof after each weld. Well I going to wait till i weld everything up because I might see something I don`t like but as it is now I`m very pleased.
I finished this up early so i figure I would play around with the back window and see if the front glass from that 80 chevy pickup will work. it has the right curve for the top and from what I can see just might work. I marked out some tape line to see how big of a back glass I can make. There something about it that is not doing it for me,might be the window is too square but I follow the lines of the body. What do you thing??
Try and make it a bit narrower as well, more like what you would see on a carson topped custom for a back window...
Roof is coming along great. I like the big rear window opening that it has now. I realize it'd be near impossible to fit a glass to that hole, but I'm not feeling the little tiny square rear window. I saw a 50ish Merc chopped using a 70 Firebird/Camaro rear glass that actually looked pretty nice. It worked well with the low top since the Camaro has a similarly low roof profile. Don't know if you'd have access to one or if you'd want to use it since it wouldn't be period correct but it's a thought.
Roy I was thinking about a 3 piece glass like in the 57 Buick. I could use the pickup glass for the middle just need to figure out something that has a curved glass for the two sides. Now this is just a idea. Might be a lot of work Also I forgot to check today but i have a front glass for a 58 Chevy truck. Was wondering if I turned it around and laid it flat could it work.
I thought about that. That kind of window looks good with a padded top, don`t know how good it will look with a painted roof. I need to skin out the rear roof with some stiff cardboard to get the look of the roof then play with window treatments.
lookin good ! 1952 fords came with a 3 piece rear window , I wonder if you could just get a center piece.
This car came that way. the glass was in 3 pieces but for in the same channel. That glass would be hard to come by. I don`t thing there is a back glass out there that will fit this opening. This is why I`m trying to use front glass. It can be cut. Peter you have a chevy pickup glass?? The one I has is tinted and had the antenna in it.
That's the later style Camaro glass, the early one doesn't curve around the sides. Although on that particular car, it actually looks pretty damn good.
Catching up, fitzee. Great progress. I like how your devious mind works. At first I think "No way, that ain't right." Then, by god, it all comes together and BINGO! Seems you know what you're doing. Love the chop, although along the way I did not think I liked it. You Canadians and Scandinavians are a resourceful lot. (Are ya'll related, or is it the 10 feet of snow?) Put some of us lazy Southern boys to shame. Love the big rear glass . . . does not have to wrap-around all the way.
We tend to look past the rust and see the car for what it use to be and dream of what it can become. But it always boils down to rust.If the rust was not there the car would not be cheep and then we would not buy it.LOL. Well that is the way I am. Can`t afford a $30,000 car but can afford thirty $1000 dolor rust buckets !!! Peter I say in the last 5 years you have spent over 30 grand on junk.I know I have work on most of it.lol
i have a rear glass out of my 75 olds convertible top ...has a very slight crown to it . i will drop it off monday . I know i am a dreamer and spend way to much on projects that i never finish ..but that is so much fun ...finding the parts , i love it . although i think that all the projects i have sold were never finished lol so you might be a first . I drove my olds 88 this summer , that was probly the best feeling in the world , the truck will be done in a few months for sure ...then i will be on the hunt for something else ..maybe something in vegas lol .
Yes peter save you money and just buy a car that just needs to be dressed up not rebuilt. Final got all the wire harness. Just need to sit down now and figure it all out.
Well it did run, But someone pulled the 305 out of it!! Steve it had be started but there was a cruel wiring set up in it. Nothing was there but what was needed to start the car. Only wired to the key and that was it.
