I'm going to paint my first full vehicle and I have a question for the painters. I'm painting my '64 Chevy van in a month or so and I've got a question about epoxy primer. I stripped the van down to bare metal and did prep the metal and sprayed it with epoxy primer. I'm using a polyester primer/filler and my question is do I have to spray another coat of epoxy primer, then paint or do I spray a non-epoxy primer, then paint or do I spray a coat of epoxy primer, then a non-epoxy primer, then paint? Hope that makes sense.
Check the datasheet for the primer you are using. I use 2k primer/surfacer and shoot color right after blocking, and blocking, and blocking, and blocking. Steve
i use the epoxy primer on the bare metal, as you did, then use a filler primer over that. i block sand it smooth then seal with a coat of epoxy [a color close to the finished paint] then paint.
By polly primer, that would be a non-epoxy? So it sounds like I apply paint over epoxy primer, correct?
I'd say look at the tech sheets for the PAINT you are using. They should have a list of recommended sealers/primers that it is best to put the paint over. Different manufacturers use different processes, even their epoxies have different qualities, so you cannot generalize!
