I googled my grandpa, Phil "Firesuit Phil" Pofahl to read stories and to see how many things would come up and I found this forum. It brings tears to my eyes to hear that many people cared for him and are thinking about our family. When he was racing or just showing his car in a park, his eyes and smile showed that he was a proud man. This is what he loved! The drive and everyone's passion for classics is what kept him going, kept him happy. I thank you all for your kid words. Sorry if parts of this message does not make full sense, my head is all over the place this week. Once again, thank you all. I couldn't more grateful. Let's keep the spirit of my grandfather alive in our hearts for years to come:)http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ABbpAob3SaQ

    I love you grandpa

Welcome to the HAMB! Thanks for the link...enjoyed the pass he made. I made my first pass on the strip in 1963, also. Nice to know granddaughters still love their granddads!

Thank you guys so much for the warm welcome, warms my heart. Today was his funeral and the stories that a few people told were just amazing! He loved racing more than anyone I know. I wish I would have spent more time with him in my younger years though, would have been nice to work on the car with him. This message board is just the greatest thing and you guys are just so sweet. I thank you for all the kind words, means a lot to me.

Sorry for your loss and welcome to the hamb. I have the priviledge to go out and get in my 53 every day, that once belonged to my grandpa. I honestly feel that he rides with me on many occasions. The only regret I ever had was that we lost him one week before I had the truck on the road for the first time. It's our responsibility to keep their memories alive for our own kids to learn of them also. Keep smiling and know that your grandpa loves you and will ride shotgun with you many time in your life ahead.

Thank you for caring and sharing your Grandfather. Sure sorry to hear of his passing, but don't worry. He's just at the other end of the strip waiting for us to catch up.

I never met your Grandpa until I watched the video. What a great smile!
I loved watching him tear down the strip. Very cool guy.
My condolences to you and your family.

My husband and i have been touring with the S&S Race Team for the last 6 years and had the pleasure of meeting your grandpa a few times. He always had a smile on his face and just loved the races. God bless you and your family on his loss.

Sorry for your loss I hope people on THE H.A.M.B. can bring back some good memories for you . WELCOME to THE H.A.M.B. from San Jose

  26. Welcome.

I met Phil last summer at the Solid Gold McDonald's cruise night. I came down to Milwaukee to do an interview for the Hot Rod Radio show. He was having a blast with the guy next to him doing a little muffler(or lack of) rapping. He was a really decent guy to talk to. Guys like him are the reason I enjoy this hobby. I invited him up to Symco last year. I was very excited to see him pull into Symco and was actually surprised he came. I wish he could have stayed longer than he did. Phil even rode his moped in our minibike parade and seemed to have a blast. I even have some video of it I will try to edit and post in the coming week or so. I also have the video of Tommy Kajava interviewing him. I hope to post it soon on youtube.

I was really looking forward to Phil coming back to Symco for 2011, not to mention running into him at a few other events. I know he was looking forward to it because I have had a few people come up and tell me so over the last few months. It won't be the same without him this year. I wish I would have had to opportunity to meet him sooner, but I am thankful for the little time I spent with him.

Rest in peace my friend. We hope there is a drag strip somewhere up there.

You will always have an open invite, same as your grandfather had, for the Symco Shakedown or anything I am ever involved with.

I heard mention his car may be loaned to the Hartford Auto Museaum for the drag race display? Is there any truth to this? I heard some good things about what they have planned over there. What a cool tribute to him if this is true.

Thanks for posting, we welcome you here.

  27. Welcome to the HAMB. Hats off to you and Phil....RIP
