Sonny McDaniel drove modifieds and midgets around Houston and the south, all the way to Florida, in the late '50s thru the early 70's. This photo taken at Joseph F. Meyer Speedway (Houston) in 1965. This photo by my track-photographer predecessor, F.E. "Mack" McKinzie.

Billy Wade, J.F. Meyer Speedway's Modified Champion for 1961 - Bill went on to have a short but successful run in the NASCAR Grand National series - He competed in 70 races over 3 years, and was the NASCAR Rookie of the Year in 1963, driving a Dodge for Cotton Owens - Driving a Mercury for Bud Moore in 1964, Billy won 4 consecutive races (the 1st person to do so) and finished 4th in the season points. Billy was killed in a Daytona International Speedway tire test on January 5, 1965.

  7. Hey, I'm looking for a car like that. Anyone out there have an old vintage racer they want to sell?

    Hey Gary / Vintage44,

Who was the driver (Don) in the pic from Langhorne 1962 (post #9240)? I see he is holding a trophy of some sort. Perhaps he was one of the consi winners? I didn't go to Langhorne until 1964, but never missed an ROC there after that. LOVED that place! Thanks for the cool pics!

    Bill,
Rentawrench is correct. It was the Langhorne Qualifier at 5 Mile Point in Kirdwood, NY in 1962. Driver was Don Yeingst. I've got some more pics I'll post in a little while. Nice hearing from you. Gary

Standing in infield pic - Don Diffendorf with Don Yeingst

Car 'renumbered' to '14' w.checkers - Don Diffendorf driving Yeingst car (short story here) - After dispute with track officials, car was 'banned' for one week as #44 and Yeingst from driving. Car became Diff's for $1 and renumbered to 14. Diff won his heat and finished second in the feature. Ahh, the good old days .....

    S10ace,

If you are looking for a vintage car there are cars for sale on many of the vintage racing car sites. DAARA, Garden State, Texas Open wheel. It just depends on what you are looking for and how far you want to go. Join a local club and tell them you are looking for a car and before you know it you will be behind the wheel. I have found that many of the club members have "extra" cars they have collected and are for sale. Send me a message and I can get you in contact with some owners.

  17. When ya' won a Langhorne qualifier at yout home track you'd get and engraved silver dish as shown in the pic.

I was lucky to be given one of the many that Kenny Shoemaker won.

I also had Will Cagle's show me a couple of his engraved dishes.:cool:

Post 9247: Might that be one of the last photos of Michael 'Sparky' Belmont at Plainville in the '00' coach? Car was in good condition and had script on the roof. Sparky died in the pits shortly after winning the 100 lap July 4th race in 1968, after which Tony 'Jap' Membrino took over driving duties for Walt Kuryn. Does anyone know for sure? All other photos I'd seen had the roof lettering removed.
Sparky was my uncle and godfather, but I was fifteen years old and wasn't able to attend races at Plainville except for once a year.

I have Chuck Boos' silver bowl from when he won the '71 qualifier at Lancaster (NY) Speedway. Lot of work to polish it back up to its original lutre, but it was worth it and I'm honored that Chuck gave me his.

I also have the last aluminum hub he ever cast in his garage and the heavy cardbord template/pattern his signpainted used to letter his famous No. 9 cars.
