Well I pulled the front off the 31 and tried for an hour to get the crank to turn and nothing.....Now I have searched and people say you can UN seize them with ATF and diesel <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comfficeffice" /><o></o> Ok so I soak the cylinders and get it broke loose, will I need to rebuild it or can it be ran like it is? Guess the question is will it survive if I just run it after I get it unstuck
so if it is stuck I should just pull it and get another engine in it.......**** kinda wanted to drive it awhile with the banger in it...its only stock once
it really depends on whats making it stuck. Might be a rod or water in the clyinder or something thats just broke.I would pull the head off and the oil pan and take a look.
Remember . . . A motors have POURED bearings. If it's stuck in the bearing, it probably needs a rebuild $$$ If the piston is stuck in the cylinder, you might only need a sledgehammer and a 2x4. (I know an "older" individual who free'd up his A motor in his restored pickup with a sledge and a 2x4 and it runs great! no smoke!) On a side note, pop the oil pan anyway it's probably filled with crud, and while you are at it you could pop the rear main off and see if it's got any cracking in the babbit.
What was the last thing you did before it got stuck? If you replaced the starter and used a bolt that was too long it may be locking the flywheel. If a bad gasket allowed water into the cylinders that would cause it to be stuck. Have you tried to turn it over with the plugs removed? Charlie Stephens
well the oil looks brand new and all pulleys turn freely(gen, water pump) its been stored inside so im thinking the rings may be stuck in the cyl.....would like to get the banger going so it gives me more time to get a nice running engine togther like a hemi or caddy engine or nailhead..
If you get it unstuck before you try and run it I would at least pull the side cover to see how much sludge is in there and to see if all the valves move. If its fairly clean and the valves all work why not try it.
soak the cylinders some more, keep turning the motor over daily, after about a week, check compression. if you have any "dead" cylinders you probably have a stuck valve or two. pulling the side cover and then the head will help then to decide your next move. if you have compression then change the oil and try to fire it up.
if moisture has gotten into the cylinders and rusted the walls then running it will be the end of the pistons, just pull the head off.
Bottom line is, its stuck for a reason Seized bearings or rusty rings expanded in the lands of the pistons don’t fix themselves from being forced to move again.
Im kinda in the same boat, but ive got the head off, and had diesiel down the bores for 3 months now. its leaking out the sump gasket, and i still havent tried turning it over. No rush, im going to see if it runs soon, as it was a new motor, but has sat for years. im proberbly looking at a rebuild, but its worth a shot.
great gramps was a model a nut, my grandpa said when he would buy one with a stuck motor they would pour some kerosene in the cylinders and tow it aroud the yard with someone inside popping the clutch and dragging the *** end until the motor freed up, they'd crank it over with no plugs to empty the kerosene, change the oil and drive them with no internal work. they did it with dozens of them, he still had 8 of them when he p***ed. if it worked that many times i'd give it a shot.
