What is the proper way to install stainless trim (Merc) without getting dings, bumps, etc.? '51 Mercury door and fender trim. Pushing the clips in usually results in a bump.
I have found that if you install the trim prior to installing the interior it is easier. Line up the clips with the holes and carefully pull them through a little at a time with needle nose pliers. Have someone who is as careful as you are ***ist you. Ford had so many problems with the early 47 trim they redesigned it with a ridge so it would not dent when installed. The late 47 and 48 trim is the type Bob Drake reproduces. Hope this helps.
dip the bottom of the clips in clear silicone and let them dry...it will encapsulate the part that comes into contact with the paint as it pushed into place.
If there are any threaded clips, be sure to put some caulking on the threads after the clip is installed thru the body. Then put the nut on and tighten only enuff to secure the trim, not dent it. The caulking should help prevent you from overtightening the nut, they usually use a big head speed nut/washer type thing. You should end up with stainless that doesn't have dings everywhere there is a clip. I straightened some stainless for a friend's 55 chev and polished it. Was beautiful until he installed it and overtightened the nuts. It was dented everywhere the nuts were overtightened. Pat.
