I am going on a road trip the end of April to New Mexico from Charlotte NC, and was going to pick up Route 66 in Tulsa OK. Are there any junkyards, Hambers, or sites I need to look for on the way out? I am looking for a '55 chevy 2 door post body as well, so any suggestions as to stops I could make, or cool stuff to see would be extremely helpful. Thanks for your suggestions
Mornin' Dodored, Do a search on Route 66 and you will find more info and photos that you will probably have time to look through... Best Wishes on your trip!...duane (NM Sandrail) 42 miles off NM Route 66...
Go to the Route 66 Association and purchase the state by state maps you need. Also many books available and one in particular that gives you turn by turn instructions so that you see everything. http://www.historic66.com/ Your most important item is time. You can't have enough if you want to see it all. Definitely stop of in Erick and see the Harley & Anna Show in their shop that has so much historical stuff.Hopefully you can be as lucky as us and see them do a show(try to time it with one of the bus tours that stop there) http://vimeo.com/11381090 Good luck and safe travels.
im in joplin, about 5 mins from pieces of old 66 if you come up this way, pm me and ill show you some stuff around here.
I grew up in Tulsa, 3 blocks south of route 66. Here's a link for the Oklahoma part, of which 400 miles is still driveable. http://www.travelok.com/Route_66?CMP=KNC-Nat_Google10_Route66
I guess I should have been more specific - I have researched all the Route 66 stuff so I got a pretty good idea about that, but I wanted the unique insight of the Hambers. Speaking of car related stuff, what is below the radar that the normal tourists would not look for? I was thinking about dead junk yards, old dragstrips, unique parts collectors, etc etc. Any thoughts?
Our trip back in 2007, great fun http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=167995&highlight=kuztomklaus

and one of the best kept secrets is finding this original section of 9' pavement in eastern oklahoma. the idea was to save money by only paving it 9' wide. you drove in the center on the pavement untill you met another car coming toward you, then you were both supposed to move over with your outside wheels in the cravel to pass.
I did the trip from idaho to charlotte and back last year in my 60 pontiac, and then again from idaho to charlotte a couple months ago, i took the 66 as long as i could. Breeze through my old threads i posted up some pictures along the way. There is cool Junkyard in Tucamacri Nm (check spelling) a bunch of orphan cars, Graham Page, Henry J's, Stude's, Etc... http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=425739 http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=425739
Fantastic, Curt. Just make sure you have some Bob Wills (Turkey,TX), Waylon Jennings (Littlefield,TX), and Buddy Holly (Lubbock,TX . . . and he recorded in Clovis,NM) when you pass through the great state of Texas through the panhandle. . . . And I've been from Tuscon to Tucumcari, Tehachapi to Tonapah, Driven every kind of rig that's ever been made, Driven the backroads so I wouldn't get weighed . . .
Go to Cadillac Ranch. My wife and I went along a lot of 66 after our wedding last year. We painted up one of the Caddys to commemorate the occasion:
I am orignally from Albuquerque, so I am looking forward to seeing it again after all these years. I am timing it with the "Meeting of the Nations" where all the Native American tribes get together for meetings and competitions. I made a trip a few years back and wondered towards Roswell NM and you would really be surprised how much vintage tin is actually sitting around. Maybe with some cash I can score my new Two Lane Blacktop '55 chevy. Does anyone know about some larger out of the way junk yards that would be worth the detour to see??
