Anybody running coils on the rear of there model A and if so what ones/where/what from did you use and how do you like them?
The old standard for coils used to be Corvair front coils. Still Fairly available if you look. Elpolacko and I were fooling around lately looking for a modern replacement and came up with Chrysler K-car rears... Haven't tried them yet, (will soon) but on paper they look like a good thing.
back in the late 70's when i built a `29 Ford pickup i used front coil springs from an early 70s Opel Manta on the rear. built pockets on the frame and rear end and had the shock up the center. worked great , but it may be hard to fine one in a junkyard
I am using EIBACH coil overs that were "donated" from a buddy, the spring rate is 250lb ( whick is gonna be to stiff, but I will change ) .
I plan to run coils on mine as well. Check out brianangus's post How to build an early hotrod frame post #19 covers coils. If you are looking for pound values, I've herd 150lbs is what to shoot for.
IRS30 , just a thought, motorcycle shocks / coils? I have no idea about lbs. or rates. Just thinking out loud. ?
I used Afo 5 inch diameter by 11 inches tall 150# sitting on top of the axle. On a 33 chev coupe they compressed to approx 8 inches.
Ive heared some one say dodge neon before. but never the seen coils in person. the wrecking yard should be full of those
Here are a few photos of my old '30 Model A hiboy coupe, on which I installed Corvair front coils for my rear suspension. I liked them, fine. It's possible that the current owner is a HAMB member. The car was sold to someone in the Northeast by Randy Moore (Kingsport, TN). When the car was sold, it's tires & wheels were red steel wheels, full wheel covers, and white wall tires. I'm the guy that built the car and sold it to Randy. Last I heard, it was painted yellow and the new owner had chopped the top.
I changed the rear suspension from air bag to coil spring. The springs are from a 1976 Mercury Capri 4 cyclinder front end. They have had 3 coils cut on each. Car actually rides good like this
