Hello Forum. I'm considering swaping my 223 Inline 6 for a 302 in my 62 ford and I was curious if there was any experience out there in this swap or similar in this generation of ford pickups. I'm worried about cost and ease of the swap. I'm in the U.S. Army and well lets face it they dont exactly pay really well for a guy with a hobby as such. But hell.... who does these days... lol Anyways, I would love to get some feedback on this and definitly some nice advice... Have a nice day forum
The little Ford was never stock in that generation Ford pickup, but there should be plenty of room to fit one in. If you have fabrication skills, it shouldn't be too hard to make mounts, or check Speedway for resonably-priced prefabbed stuff.
Carolina Classics sells a cross member for a SBF engine swap for $75 or so. I highly recommend going that route to save head aches down the line. I think the part no. is CP-4819
And if you are going to the trouble to do that, skip the 302 and go to a 351W. It'll fit the same mounts and cost the same to build. Later model trucks and vans have roller blocks too.
i appriciate all the input on this... i was hoping for a little more insight in the cost and the headaches that i would encounter during this swap... I'm not car stupid but i've never done a restore.... and i'm pretty much taking the body off and grinding down the frame and spraying it and replacing all body parts that need replacing before i put the body back on... and i have the I6 in it right now but i want the rumble of a v8 in her so i figure while i've got all this off i might as well swap the motor over rebuilding the I6 that is in it i will check out that link Comet thank you
check out the 61-66 f100 group. Lots of guys do this swap and it isnt that expensive or complicated. Cost really depends on how much you can get a motor and trans for.
I know this isn't what you asked but don't forget about the 300 six. I had one in an 80s Bronco and liked it much better than the 302 I have now. May be an easier swap depending on your transmission/bellhousing choice and they're easy to find in junkyards. And if you do got the SBF route to get that v8 feel, go with a 351W as mentioned above. You may want to tow something in the future with a nice pickup and the 302 isn't really a torque powerhouse.
Hey 62, I have done a few of those swaps and I should have the stuff lying around that I would give you for the swap. I do not have a tranny mount and you would have to cut out the mid engine mount that is in your truck now. I am a few miles away from you almost to chickasha. Do you already have the 302?
You're doing pretty much exactly what I'm doing with my '64 F100. I just bought the engine mounts and trans cross from So-Cal Speedshop locally. Same parts are in the Speedway catalog too. Its about $150 to purchase the steel parts and the mounts. There are a coupe of threads on this topic in the F100 Allianace, come join up if you haven't already. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/group.php?groupid=173
Hey Okiewelder! I appriciate the hook-up... i'm currently deployed right now.... but i will keep you in mind and will most likely hit you up when i return. Crack some beers(if your a drinker) and scratch our heads over it and see what we can come up with... Hows the home state anyway?
I was going to do an engine upgrade on my '59 F-100 several years ago. After a lot of checking around I settled on a 351W with a C-4 trans. I was told the best choice for the trans was a C4 out of a E30 van. Motor mounts were a problem as was the front sump pan that Ford has been in love with for a long time. I found a late model Lincoln, '86, with a 351W that had a spit sump pan, it would clear everything with out the need to alter the pan and pump. The steering became a problem. The Ford Gemmer steering box is brutal, I converted mine to a GM Sagina (spl.?) from a '59 Chevy... it worked great. Ford used the GM steering boxes in the HD panel trucks. If you truck has a 4spd trans and you want to keep it, adapters become a very big problem... been there, done that. The bellhousing from a Ford six, 240/300 will bolt right up to a 302/351, however you will have to change to a NP T-18 in lieu of the BW T-98.
