Which one do you enjoy attending more or prefer and why?

I'd like to attend CHRR this year or March Meet next year. Traveling the distance I would be, I'd like some thoughts on the events to help me decide which one I'd like to go to.

    Thanks,

    Ken

They are different and they are the same.there is so much to see and experince at both of them , you will wish you were a clone so you could see it all.
go to both and report back!! come out from under that rock.

MARCH MEET....hands down.... the vibe is totally different...thats why it's been called the WOODSTOCK of Drag Racing.... CHRR is more for the show that the go...and besides....who wouldn't like to kick off a cold winter with partying in 70 degree weather? By the time October rolls around there just isnt any cabin fever left!

  5. The March Meet is like no other, but so is the CHRR. Apples and oranges.

CHRR, IMO the March Meet isnt that great.

  7. I've attended every Reunion now except for 3 of them. Have seen it change and evolve since the 1st one.
Been at least a half dozen MMs.

As a spectator, they each have their virtues. It depends on what you like and what you want to see. If you mainly want to see racing for 3 days, hit the MM.
If you want to see more vintage and rare stuff, the Reunion is a better choice with still plenty of racing too.
The swap meet is about the same at either one and is pretty good.

Sadly, as someone who has transitioned from a spectator to a racer, both events have become much less attractive and more expensive due to now the NHRA being involved. When Good Guys ran it, was much more affordable. Now have been pushed out and i will miss it. In the last couple of years, NHRA has added almost $20,000 in costs to pass tech and that is just nuts. Now they wan titainium flywheels and carbon fiber brakes! This is not nostalgia stuff. Costs are out of hand.
Do not plan to even attend at this time because It makes me sick. Perhaps later, may attend again, not sure. I cherish all the times and years I did attend but, it is not the same anymore.
Time to look for new places to race nostalgia.
In some ways, they have become a display for motorhomes as the racers get pushed further and further back.
it's a different world for the participant as it is for the racers.

I am sure if you go, you will enjoy yourself but, not for me anymore.

Try the chicken strips with fries. they are really good.

The CHRR most likely but I'll take either one if the rain stays away.
Looks grim this coming weekend for the MM.:(

The whole Nostalgia thing has slowly gone away especially in Fuel Funny cars. Guys are running Brads and Alan Johnson's late model chassis's ETC and are going faster and faster. only makes sense that the requirements get tighter. Even the brackets are tougher to tech. But that's racing. ;)

CHRR. For me, the history can not be matched. Cars and drivers you have only read about about in magazines, and they are completely accessible. I do both, but definitely tip my cap to the Reunion.

applekrate and AG F/C, I hate to hear what you're sayin.' Guess it's "progress" in the nostalgia world.

After watching the Winternationals a few weeks back on TV (and it'd been a LONG TIME since I'd attended a National Event (81' Winternationals at that) or even watched one the tube) I couldn't get over how generic it had become. At least to me. The funny cars all looked the same except for the paint schemes. Same with top fuel.

Made me miss the days of my youth and it's (the history) that got me here to HAMB and wanting me to attend either or both of the events.

Maybe I'm just getting old and grumpy, but progress sucks!

Either way, thanks for sharing your thoughts guys.

I hear ya. God bless "progress". Next step will be when JF pulls out 4 trailers filled with funnycars and a handful of drivers, right? It's hard to be a private racer/owner these days with NHRA and SEMA calling the shots.
    Yes, the chicken is good

  14. When the nostalgia nitro movement started in the mid to late 80s, it was set up very well. They did not want to have anything to do with NHRA and the national, corporate sponsors, etc. They wanted to recreate it they way it used to be. To quote Frank Fedak who is one of those that started it, "That was a time when 1-2 guys, with a decent job, could afford to go fuel racing. In the 60s, there were 64 car nitro top fuel fields. Often, over 100 Top Fuelers would show up to try to qualify for this 64 car field.
This weekend, I would be surprised if there are more than 20 top fuelers.
When Frank set up the rules, he required, point magnetos and modest fuel pump restrictions along with some other great rules that enabled people to do just that. As a spectator, I was hooked . Great rules, great cars, great affordable racing. Sad that things have gone away from that but, things do change.
However, if something is to be nostalgic, they should stay that way, not evolve IMO.
On the plus side, I am sure another nostalgic venue will surface in the coming years where it may again be affordable to do this.
I have put a 'million' dollars into my nitro Top Fueler and will now just do testing locally in Arizona instead of heading to the Patch.
My car has a 1960 engine block so is what some call 'real' nostalgia. I think that is what Hambers really want to see instead of the high dollar and quite modern looking nitro cars.
The Funnies put on the great show and do somewhat recreate the 70s era of the floopers. But, they are so pricey the way the rules are, that no average Joe could ever do it. It is nice to see them run in the 5s but, the crowd would like them just as much if they ran in the mid 6's and, believe it or not, it is MUCH less expensive to set up a nitro car to do that.

I realize this group on this board are primarily spectators or lower class racers on these events. Just trying to put into perspective the challenges of running in the top or upper classes in the nostalgia world.

I wish everyone, racer and fan alike, a fun and safe weekend at the Patch.

  15. Applekrate, I understand and concur. I'm thankful for my 20 years of racing when it happened.

    Applekrate,
I recall TF being limited to Donovan's and early Hemis. Am I wrong?

We would like to run a B/B FC class it it were brought back Like the AA Gas class but in Funny Car. But at that level the billet Brads and AJ's along with the big big buck blowers ETC, would need to be out. Run period KB blocks or early Hemis. Till then 7.0 pro and NE1 are it for us.

A bit OT but we have one of the best race venues in our back yard Pomona and as of now only 2 noise events (the Winter Nats and the Finals) are being used. How about resurrecting a race there?

Hope all of the racers have a safe weekend in BF.

Both are great events as a spectator. I'm a little worried that the NHRA will keep eliminating my favorite classes (doorslammers) & now there's rumors about the closing of Pomona & that the NHRA is going to develop Famoso. I love to see some money thrown at the facility but not at the expense of both the CHRR & the MM.
Someday I'd like to race a class but $$$ might be to high if things keep going in the direction.

NHRA, The Drag Racing Gold Chain Racing Guys.

  20. Last time I looked nobody was forcing anybody to race! The nature of drag racing is to keep going faster, hence the rule changes. It's the racers themselves that are building faster cars. It would be great to return to the "old days", but that's NEVER going to happen. As for lack of cars, the FC's are multipling like rabbits! The fact is FC's are more popular and have an easier time booking dates, just like the old days. As for eliminating classes at the March Meet, the last few years have run really late, I don't want to stay until late night, so a faster ( hopefully) pace is welcome by me.
Everyone seems to trash the NHRA, but very few alternatives are ever proposed.
Bottom line:if you don't like the rules, don't race, if you don't like the show, don't go!
I wouldn't miss going! I always have a great time!

  21. From a racers point of view, the MM.

From a spectators point of view, CHRR.

The best combo at a much cooler track, is the NHRR, in Bowling Green.

    IMHO.

  22. It's a shame AA/Gs isn't running this year, it's one of the best classes. But talk about a FAR FAR cry from real gassers! They are basically short wheelbases alcohol FC's!
    Nobody gripes about that!

    I would say CHHR

I hear the march meet is cutting out alot of classes from their racing part of the show. Ive never been to the march meet but have never had the desire to go since I go to the reunion.

Chrr is by far the best. The cackle cars randomly shoot down the return way cackling, they have a time slot to sit on the track and idle, and have a show off at the doubletree in town. Last race of the year so the racing is about the championship if not decided yet. Its an awesome meet.

March meet this year will by far suck the big one. They cut a lot of classes and are running rear engine dragsters that are supposed to be '70s correct' but look like modern top fuels with a short wing and 70s esque nose/ wing.

    CHRR all the way.

CHRR feels more grass roots racing. MM feels too pro.
