'51 Mercury accessory wheel. I seen one ebay recently that went for just over $550.00. Same era Lincoln, or late fifties GM wheels looks ***s usually. Or, the stock ones are nice too.
I am converting 50 Merc column to run in a car with a MII and was supprized to find it has a keyed steering wheel. Anyone know if 50 was the last year since I see above it was reported that 51 is splined.
Shoebox coupe wheels look awesome. Im running one in my roadster. Big and cl***y...and alot cheaper than the more desireable wheels out there. I picked mine up for 50 bucks
It's funny this thread came back up, I was looking the other night and damned if my 50 Mercury doesn't have a keyed steering wheel. I know I'm pretty full of ****, but I could've swore the Fords were splined.
Thats what I was thinking too. Some day I hope to find an accessory wheel and now I wonder if it will work on a 50 column?
Take the splined shaft out of the 51 and install a keyed shaft in it's place. They both are 3/4" shafts.
If you want a splined shaft, you can harvest one out of most any worn out Ford steering box, car or truck from the 50s/60s. I went the other way and welded a tapered shaft on a 56 Ford truck box so that I could use an original banjo wheel on the 56 box after I removed the turn signal switch housing.
49 & 50 MERCS are keyed ( I dunno about 51 Merc, never had one apart) 49 & Up Ford p***enger cars are splined. 48 F1 Truck Columns I have found have been a mix of both keyed & splined, 49-53 F1 Truck Columns in my experience are splined. I put a 42 Lincoln wheel (keyed) in my A coupe, uesd a 49 Ford F1 Truck box, no big chicago right, just find the wheel you want, then find the column to fit that wheels hub style (either splined or keyed), then cut & swap to fit, it is simple & safe if you know how to weld, if not, find someone that does, you can even sleeve it for added peace of mind. It's a great time, everyone should do it! Sincerely, Known Steering Wheel Swapper Cheatercarl
1950 Ford Crestliner steering wheels are splined. Limeworks speed shop will begin reproducing them in the near future. They already make the Crestliner hornring with the emblem. A beautiful piece!
I adapted the stock steering wheel from my '38 Ford pickup to a tilt column out of a '77 Monte Carlo. Discovered that the taper of the shaft is the same, even though the Monte Carlo shaft is splined. Cut a keyway in the Monte Carlo shaft to match Henry's wheel, and we all live happily ever after.
