I was measuring the rear wheel wells on my '59 last night to see what size tire would fit, and I realized that even though something like a 295 would fit in there, it might be really tough to get on- and off-the car, especially if I put lowering blocks on it. Any suggestions for how to measure the wheel well for that before I buy the wheels and tires? I was thinking of jacking the car up until the distance from the top of the wheel to the fender lip was maxed out, then lower it no more than that so I can get wide tires on and off without tilting them any.

I have 275's on my 59 Ranchwagon and could have put 295's on as well. As long as you have the car jacked up enough, there's no problem putting them on and taking them off. The other consideration is the offset of the rims but I think if I change tires, I will go to 295's ...Good luck

Thanks for the info - I'll let you know how it turns out. I was planning on adding about 2" to the backspacing based on static measurements. I'll jack up one side and see what kind of clearance I have with the axle tilted.

I went w/ a 255/60 , plenty big and not an issue going in and out , was sizing up the 275 but felt it could be a problem going in and out .

What I think I'll do for a test is to tape cardboard around the tread and see how it works going on and off, and with the axle tilted.
