I have a 67 DeVille (no flames please, she is my daily) and need to replace the strut rod bushing, the large donut that bolts throught the front crossmember. I removed the large nut, the sway bar link, and the two bolts that connect it to the lower a arm. after installing the new bushing halves and washers, the holes in the a arm are about an inch off. There is a nut on the back side of the bushing assembly that i could adjust. will i need to have the front end aligned if i adjust the inside nut? I replaced one on my 79 f-150 and the alignment did not change, but the inner washer seated on a stop on the arm, which faced backwards not forwards. I have to replace both sides, and am replacing the sway bar links while i am at it. is it ok to adjust the inner nut? I am new to the gm family, so it this is all a little foreign to me.
You can back off the nut on the backside of the strut rod to get it all lined up. Get them tightened up as close to where they were originally, and then I'd recommend to check the alignment. Mostly will mess up your caster angle which could make it dart from lane to lane, or pull. If you count your turns to back it off and count them back when you tighten it up you'll probably get it as close as you can for a driveway alignment.
thanks. replacing them because the car was darting from lane to lane during braking, and don't say it, i have about 1500 in the braking system. looking at the parts on advance auto parts website, there is a different set than what i have that more closely resembles what i took off, but it is triple the price. i can make the moog set work.
