Blue dots

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Zeke Fishburn, Feb 26, 2010.

  1. The first blue dots I remember seeing were on a '49 Ford in about 1954. I was four years old. I never forgot the look and put them on any of my old cars that I can.

Up through the thirties they where a dealer installed option listed as saftey dots. They are proven to increase the visabilty of the taillight when the brake is on by as much as 100%. I remeber a test we did in Oregon to prove this with a Model A. Ran the car out 300 yards. You could barley see the stock lens but the one with the blue dot was bright and clear. Only really becomes a problem on later model stuff.

  3. They are probably frowned on in most states but i still like them but the trouble with them is they are not very bright at night and hardly noticeable during the day when applying the brakes.

With so many people driving while texting and not possessing the capacity for intelligent thought you run the risk of being a statistic on the eleven o'clock news. HRP

our law is red or amber only on the rear of the car, a ticket out there with your name on it for blue dots. That being said most of us could care less if you are not being a jerk.all vehicles must have mufflers too and you see how that goes.
Point is if you get a ticket, smile and say thank you to the nice man and call him a jerk on here.

I like them. They also go with other "period perfect" items, like fuzzy dice, mud flaps that have colored dot reflectors screwed into them and / or chrome trim (gotta have 4, not just 2), curb feelers, racoon tails on the antennas, rows of little pom-poms around the inside of your windows, imbossed clear seat covers, kitten and skulls with red brake light eyes in the parcel tray and kitchen drawer pulls on your grille. A lot of this stuff is still sold at big truck stops, JC Whitney and motorcycle shops. Gary

    i like em.....
a long time ago I replaced my tails lights with red plexiglass etched on the inside
    very pretty
never got pulled over for that as they were very visible and I had the reflective tape on the ends of my bumper. i did get pulled over for having my front plate in the front window. 1975 chevy van - the plate was less than 2 feet away from being on the front bumper.

long story on that police trip....
ran red dots in my old buick... never had a problem with it either.

Ha ha! The mud flaps with reflectors gotta be white rubber and dragging on the ground or you're just not cool. Can't forget the anti-static strap hanging off the back bumper.
Those clear seat covers make my balls sweat just by lookin' at 'em!

  9. The first time I ever saw blue dots was in the 70's in Vista, CA. I came up behind this hotrod one night sitting at the stoplight on the corner Vista way and Santa Fe and there was this amazing purple glow! I'd never seen anything like it and I couldn't figure out where it was coming from at first. It definitely made an impression on me as a teenager.

There was a giant cruise in Sunnyvale, CA in 1982. My wife and I took my F100 to make a pass, and the Sunnyvale fuzz cut in behind, alongside, and in front. I stopped, got out, and "assumed the position", to ridicule their inane stop...
The 24 yr. old mouthpiece said the reason they stopped me was for these "Blue Taillights"!
I say: "What's the jim with the roust?"
Badge #1 says: "These blue lights are used for police identification."
I say: "I just got back from Montana, these are used there for snow visibility."
Badge #2 says: "Never heard of that...Out here they're illegal."
I say: "Oh, well! I have a stock California pair back at the shop....I'll replace 'em tonight!"
Badge #1 says: "Well then, we'll spare writing you. Don't stay in traffic around here, and you won't get stopped for the same thing again."

And that's the way I 'snowed' the Sunnyvale Anti-Cruise Patrol! Whew!

I guess in Dallas the cops are to busy with drugs, murder, guns and donuts cause theyve never said a thing to me or anyone I know...Now the expert at the inspection station well thats a different story. He tells me My 52 wont pass because I dont have blinkers, seat belts and those little blue things are illegal!

<CENTER>They have been legal in Idaho since 1993.

Nothing herein shall prohibit the display on any vehicle thirty (30) years old or older of tail lamps containing a blue or purple insert lens not to exceed one (1) inch in diameter, provided the tail lamps otherwise comply with the requirements of this section.
