Has anyone ever done an engine swap with the chevy inline 216 to the gmc inline 302?

I have been told that it will drop right in....And that it has the same side motor mounts that the 216 has. I was not sure of the specs of the engine, if it is longer or it has the same clearance as the 216 with the fan from the radiator so i can just drop it in without hastle.

Also, will the 216 3 speed transmission adapt right to the 302 inline?

I am just curious because i have heard a lot of good things about these motors and might consider one in the near future for my 53 chevy.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks!

I would check out "The Stovebolt Page" article about the swap.Look in the tech tips and you will find the article.

No, the 302 doesn't just bolt in. The engine is longer and taller than the 216. Depending on whether you have a civilian or military block decides the engine mounts, etc. But since the motor is longer, the front saddle mount would be in the wrong place to match up with the 216 location. However, the chevy bellhousings do bolt up to them. Depending on your application, you'll probably have to move the radiator forward. That's what I had to do.

If you plan to have a little fun with that 302 & stock transmission you'd better stock up on transmissions. Or, go easy on the clutch.

I have a 6-71 blower on my 302 mated to the stock 4 speed non syncro ******. I still haven't had a problem. But I had the same thought you did, so when I was building it, I found 4 extra ******s...lol. Haven't needed them yet though. I think the torque tube universal and rear axles would go before the ******.

Skid', first I've heard of needing to change the flywheel, what were you trying to accomplish with that?

I thought the starters wouldn't interchange, was that it (different ring gear)?

To the best of my recollection I used the GMC pickup and small truck flywheel. The Chevy flywheel did not bolt to the GMC crank.

If what he has is a truck with a 4 speed, then the transmission is ok. If it is a car he will need spare transmissions.

Thanks for all the info everyone. There was a lot of interesting stuff. I just wanted to do some homework before purchasing it.
I would be putting it into a 1953 chevy car, 150 model. Maybe i will reconsider another transmission if i go through with it.

Thanks again for all your help everyone!
