i just finished putting new brakes and lines on my 50'.. i've got a firewall mounted master cylinder, front disc and rear drum brakes.. i've got a 10lb. residual valve inline for the rear brakes and can't get it sealed.. i've tried snugging it a little more, took it off and tried to reseat it, nothing seems to work.. what should i try next?? i was thinking of using brake fluid to lubricate the threads... any ideas?

  2. is it leaking where there is an inverted flare...or pipe threads?

    inverted flares need no sealer

If the leak is at the flare fitting look for a cracked/damaged flare.

wilwood told me to use teflon tape to seal the flared adapter to res. valve connection. true story.

with a firewall mount, however, it (the valve) is probably not necessary.

I'm with John in that there is either a damaged or cracked flair or a bad flair. or the machining in the residual valve it's self is bad.

I put RPV in mine just two days ago. I taped the pipe threads with teflon tape and seated them out on the bench where I could really crank them down. I also attached my brake line out on the bench, again so I could really put the "reef" to them. No leaks. Brake lines and the br*** fitting to the RPV are cheap. I'd replace the two and go from there. What, maybe $10? I put RPVs' even with a firewall mounted MC. Can't hurt anything, and with 10 lbs positive pressure against the bleeder valve, it makes bleeding easier.

I put just a touch of pipe dope on the threads to over come friction so that the flare would get the full force, worked well with DOT 5.

brake lines shouldnt need any type of sealant,it would only mask a leak ,which after reacting with said sealant will leak again.and if you ****on up your system and you have a leak replace both ends as was said .

Not knowing what residual valve you have, but you mentioned 10#, I will offer up this. ***uming residual valve is blue and it has 1/8 npt inlet outlet, you need to have a 1/8 male npt to inverted flare fitting, seal the 1/8 npt male treads and make sure it is tight into valve. If you are flaring the tube make sure you have a good flare, the slightest flaw will cause a leak, in some cases a little tighter will cure but not to often.

I have seen components and fittings that were improperly machined.
