Wow, some of you guys think that Drake went over seas just to make more money...time for a ****ing reality check....you want all parts made in the USA?,...Good, then tool it up and get your wallet out.
Then start *****ing about how "I don't want to spend 80 bux for that, repop is only 10 from China".

I know some companies that move there production from China to Vietnam at the moment. The labor cost in China is to high!

Soon you will see "Bob Drake, Made in Nigeria"
Africa is the last continent that can provide super cheap labor.

But in the end what is created is also a market for US made products. It will just take some more time...
"Made in China" is probably not the biggest threat to your jobs or you life style.

The environment and possibly pandemics is the great threat to us.
Also shortage of energy might in the end give a big boost to local produced products.

The same thing is going on in farming. China wants to dump more food on the U.S. We have enough food here allready that we grow. I would have less of a problem with Chinese products if the quality is good and most of all we had a equall dollar for dollar trade balance. Yes they are out to eat our lunch. As far as foreign oil goes, we need to raise the price of exported food to oil producing opec nations the point where 55 gallons of corn , wheat , potatoes " ETC" costs the same as opec's 55 gallon drum of oil. Because you can't grow alot of food where there is a desert with little water.

I'll call you on this one-********- it's American consumers wanting super cheap Walmart prices and getting **** for their pennies-no government forced you into Walmart at gunpoint. Don't blame a government-take ownership of your share of the problem.

Wired magazine ran a few articles about China manufacturing last month. The first was about worker suicides at the plant that makes iPhones. A big question if Apple is culpable or not. The bottom line is, since they put nets around all the buildings the suicide rate is way down.

The second article was about some smaller US companies who are moving back onshore. Basically when you consider low quality product deliveries, manufacturing/supply chain delays (if you a small player your products gets put on the bottom of the priority list), rising cost of shipping and labor, and factor them all together then sometimes it does make sense to produce onshore. Onshore does cost more but removing supply chain delays and better quality does make sense for the company highlighted in the article. One key to producing onshore is heavy automation, that means more robots and not so many workers.

My bother manufactures custom wheels in China and constantly has supply delays and is always at the mercy of the factory. It's a seasonal business and a real PIA when your product shipment is delayed. The wheel industry is a commodity business and has moved from US, Mexico, Taiwan, Korea and then to China because of labor costs. Polishing aluminium wheels is an extremely manual process. Not to mention environmental issues with chrome plating.

I talked to a guy from Drake's at Hershey this year when I saw their new '40 Ford coupe body. He said they couldn't afford to have it designed or made here. I think the price of it was about $14000. Then he was *****ing about how it cost like $1000 per body or something like that to ship and import them here. I can't remember all the dollar amounts we talked about, but it boiled down to the fact that for maybe for another $3000 per body they could have been made here. It's not like we don't have the manufacturing or design people here. His lead designers we all Americans living In China. Bottom line was it came down to profit. I'm sure that if you had $14000 to spend on a repo body in the first place you could pony up another $3000 for a US made one and have some pride in it. I buy all my O/T car sheet metal from a company called Tabco. They don't have a flashy web site or a bunch of guys in matching garage shirts posing everywhere. Just good, thick, made in the Ohio, USA sheet metal for the same cost as those other guys.

We all have to vent at some point but sending messages on the web or this site does little good. If you want your voice heard then go to the polls and vote. Most of us feel the same way on imported goods on our USA street rods but currently there is no choice for most of us.

I see you are unable to recognize sarcasm when you read it (my first line), but the truth is that Chinese factories DO employ kids as young as SIX in their factories. They DO live in ****py quarters, generally 20 to a so-called "dorm room". They DO work 12- to 15-hour days, regardless of age. And yes, they DO get paid the equivalent of a buck a day...or LESS.'

But, hey, that means your 56" plasma TV is only $695.00 at your local We-sell-only-Chinese-**** store. That's the ugly truth. Deal with it.

    Perfectly said right there
Then try reading the link I posted (back a page or two) on what Bob said on this very subject.

You will see that some things cant even be built here because the technology is long gone. Ether because its obsolete or it was already moved overseas by someone else’s greed.

You think the man has the HP to build entire factory’s from scratch and supply you with low priced parts so you don’t *****?

  20. Spend more time watching C-Span.. We are living in some very interesting times right now.. I see things getting better and think they will be better than ever once we get this debt all straightened out..

The word around here (Pittsburgh) is manufacturing will be going back into hi gear soon.. They had a commission run by the CEO of Boeing and changed a bunch of import/export laws to favor the United States..
