Just wanted to know if anybody is using a older wagon to tow with .I have been thinking about buying one and getting rid of my late model truck but I use the truck to tow with .Will need a wagon that can handle about 5000lbs? thats the max for my truck.I looking to stay in the between the 1960's to 1970's in age the brand dosen't matter. Any ideas
one of my buddies is putting air ride assist on the rear of his 63 ford long roof so he can tow his project chop and channel truck...not sure if it will tow it for sure but his is going to try
A buddy has a 64 galaxie wagon w/ 390, tows his other cars on a trailer with it, but not sure about 5000lbs. It does look pretty cool though.
Any full frame vehicle with a V8 should be able to do it. Just make sure you get a Class III hitch and a tranny cooler.
If it is just for towing why beat an oldie? I tow almost every weekend with various 80's Chevy wagons and during the week they are loaded just in the back making equipment deliveries over several states. About 5000 lbs with a 305 and up to 7200 with a 350. Just dont put the 700R4 into OD and use a cooler. Those wagons are built rugged; we buy them with over 150K and they just keep running. Stay away from the 307 which is the most common engine, they have no towing balls.
One of my daily rides is a 57 Chevy wagon. I pull several trailers with it including the trailer I haul cars on. Some of you have seen it at the Pate swap meet. its great for a trailer. Big Heavy car with a 300 horse engine
Used my wagon to tow my 32 chassis around when I had it... would not trust it to two 5000 lbs .. I would look for a wagon with leaf springs so you can put overloads on it if needed (and possibly airbags to help with the weight.). As for the comment about folks using their wagons to tow stuff back in the 50/60. you did not see them towing car trailers much, camper trailers, tow dollys or flat pull but not car trailers (did not think there were many car trailers back then)... big difference between pulling and having a car trailer with that kind of weight on the tongue... Just my opinion
[ QUOTE ] We towed Kartbreaker't T roadster to the drags in Temple with my 54 stude wagon. [/ QUOTE ] Yeah and that was the coolest site watching ya tow it in...Got my attention.
I've always been partial to '74-'78 LTD's with 460's, or Caprice/Impala wagons from '72-76 with 454's myself...and the '70-72 Cutlass/Buick wagons with 455's are easy on the eyes. Not sure of the towing capacity, but parts are available still at local auto parts stores...
I'll be flat towing the roadster to Florida with the 62 Ford wagon. But I would drive your car down before I would tow it. Put a heater in and have a blast!!!! Clark
Thanks for the input. I am not looking to trailer my coupe all over the place but I do need something to tow the random piles of crap that I bring home like the Mustang I bought a couple of weeks ago. I would drive my car to Florida but after last years problems I don't think so.
Can't give you any info but here is a picture I took a few years ago. Chopped wagon pulling dragster.
This is/was (going to europe) my loooong roof tow rig. Used it to tow cars (tow dolly) and could fit 2 full sized Harleys in it. Notice the rainbow. You can tell I'm truely blessed.
I beleive that chopped wagon pulling the dragster belongs to Tom from the Indy Road Rockets and as far as I know he's not on the HAMB.
The one major item to towing with anything is BRAKES, lack of stopping power is not any fun and you can wad up yourself and prized posessions real quick . Whatever you get make sure the brakes are A-1 and you can even up grade to bigger shoes, discs and dual master cyl.
