I read a post awile back were someone used a regular antenna on its side under the dash. Have many of you guys done this and how good does it really work? I'm thinking of doing this in my 41 olds under the metal dash.

FWIW, I had an old blazer and mounted the antenna to the outside of the framerail. Reception wasn't quite as good as the stock fender location, but it did work ok.

My roadster came with one mounted horizontally under the running board. It worked reasonably well. I never did any testing for distance but it picked up everything around here. It was FM. Inside the car might not be so good. A lot depends on how far from the station that you live. Montana might be a problem but in suburban Wash. DC it's fine:D

Mine is under the dash in my 54 Chevy, and it works like a charm. Nothin fancy, just zip tied to the defrost duct! And it is FM.

I've installed them under the dash and had no problems.

would it be better to use a rubber coated boat antenna?

Mounted one underneath the running board on my 41 Ford years back, & wasen't very impressed with the results, I ended up putting a hidden antenna under the headliner, it worked............

I would think that the quality of the antenna would have an effect on how good the reception would be. Also back when me and friends were younger when we would install stereos in are newly purchased used cars we always trimmed the antenna in with radio(remember that). Not sure if new radios have that option anymore or not I have not installed a new radio/stereo in a long time, if it is still an option it does help with reception.

  16. I usually put mine behind the kickpanel inside the A-post. I've never had a problem with reception.

I have used a piece of lamp cord soldered to an antennae plug and it worked fine. It was a fibergl*** car though. I don't know how much difference that would make.

Go to a bike dealership and look at the dakota digital underfaring antenna. Nice long cable, and can be easily hidden inside the car on the back side of the gl*** somewhere. Pretty good reception. They run about $80 bucks. Ive had several customers run them on bikes, and a few on cars, nobody has complained. This winter I'm putting one in my unibody.

  20. I just have to share this expirence with ya'll!
Today in the garage we were mounting the radio in the IHC and it has as mentioned in #16 the antenna mounted in the A-post behind the kick panel. As we hooked up the radio it just happened to be on 87.9 FM and it picked up the signal from the FM transmitter that we had hooked up to the Ipod about 10 feet away! I just thought that was pretty amazing, since how powerful can a FM transmitter like that really be?
So I guess this method works huh?
